Calumet Wins Football District – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet’s Dryden Nelson leaps over the Negaunee defensive line.

Dryden Nelson ran for more than 280 yards, as Calumet claimed a district football championship by defeating Negaunee 24-19 last night. After a scoreless first quarter, Tom Erkkila kicked a 24-yard field goal to put the Copper Kings on the board. Nelson’s 65-yard TD run gave the Kings a 10-6 halftime lead. Nelson added scoring runs of 80 and 23 yards in the second half, as the Copper Kings avenged an early-season loss to the Miners. Calumet faces an 850-mile round trip to Standish for its regional game next Saturday. The Standish-Sterling Panthers advanced with a 34-14 victory over Boyne City last night. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 in advance of a 1:00 kickoff on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

The Calumet volleyball team will face Iron Mountain in the regional semifinals Tuesday. The Mountaineers blanked Manistique 3-0 to win their district title last night. The Copper Kings advanced with a 3-0 win over Hancock Thursday. Tuesday’s game will take place at Westwood High School. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

The Hancock hockey team will hold a returnable can and bottle drive today. Donations may be dropped off between 9:00 and 1:00 at Laurn Grove Park.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team opened its season with a 97-52 loss to Wisconsin-Superior last night. Luke Mattson led the Lions with 11 points. Finlandia wraps up play at the Merrill Thompson Classic in Superior this afternoon against Wisconsin-River Falls.

The Finlandia women’s team fell to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 60-53 last night. Carsyn Osterman scored 22 for the Lions, and Bailey Froberg added 15. The Lions were scheduled to host Mount Mary University tomorrow, but that game has been postponed to January 8th.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team outscored Purdue Northwest 3-1 yesterday afternoon. Julia Pietila scored early for the Huskies. Grace Shaw’s header provided the eventual game-winner, and Stephanie Yeager added the final goal on a corner kick. The win guaranteed Tech a home game in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The Huskies return home to finish their regular season against Northern Michigan University tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.

College Volleyball

The 22nd-ranked Tech volleyball team swept Northwood 3-0 yesterday. Anna Jonynas had 15 kills. The Huskies conclude their regular season at home against Lake Superior State today at 2:00.

College Football

The MTU football team plays at Northwood today.

The NMU football squad visits Saginaw Valley State.

The Finlandia University football team hosts Greenville University this afternoon. Coverage begins at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to Lake Superior State 3-2 in overtime last night. Tristan Ashbrook and Brian Halonen scored for the Huskies. Blake Pietila took the loss in net, as Tech outshot the Lakers 44-21. Those teams skate again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student ice Arena.

The NMU hockey team outscored Boston University 5-3 last night. Those teams meet again tonight in Marquette.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell 1-0 at Concordia-Moorhead last night. Kayla Savoie-Penton stopped 28 shots for the Lions. Those teams play again this afternoon.

The Lions men’s team lost 4-3 at Bethel College yesterday afternoon. Tyler Watungwa, Flynn Perry and Max Messier scored for the Lions. Marcus Gloss made 53 saves, as Finlandia was outshot 57-20.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ scoring struggles continued last night, with a 96-90 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The bright spot was top draft choice Cade Cunningham, who led Detroit with 17 points.

The Pistons visit the Houston Rockets Wednesday. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 the Lift.

MLB

Two Tigers pitchers have opted for free agency. Ian Krol and Drew Hutchison cleared waivers this week, and were removed from Detroit’s 40-man roster. Both are free to sign with any club.

NFL

Tomorrow, the Green Bay Packers visit the Kansas City Chiefs. The Detroit Lions have the week off. In the Sunday night game, the Chicago Bears play the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
