Calumet Wins District; Houghton and Chassell Advance – Thursday Sports Update

High School
In girls tournament basketball play last night…
– In Class C, Calumet won the district title by smothering L’Anse 67-19. The Copper King will face the winner of tomorrow night’s game between Negaunee and Gwinn in the regional semifinals next week. See video highlights from the game here.
– In Class B, Houghton advanced with a 54-50 victory over Gladstone. The Gremlins will take on Escanaba in the district final tomorrow night at 7:00 at Houghton. Hear the game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
– In Class D at Ontonagon, Chassell trailed Lake Linden-Hubbell by 11 at the end of the third quarter. The Panthers then scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter, and went on to claim a narrow 39-37 victory. Chassell’s Milly Hoskins led all scorers with 17 points. Peyton Gast scored 10 for the Lakes. Ontonagon held Baraga to just two points in the first quarter on the way to a 48-39 victory. The Gladiators led by 11 at halftime. The Vikings battled back, and closed the gap to five before Ontonagon pulled away. Lori Wardynski scored 22 for the Gladiators – 15 in the first half. Carsyn Osterman led Baraga with 14 points. Chassell and Ontonagon will meet for the district title tomorrow night at 7:00 in Ontonagon. Hear the game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In boys regular-season play tonight…
– Houghton plays at Marquette.
– Calumet hosts Escanaba. The JV game will start at 4:30, and the varsity contest at 6:00.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Jeffers.
– Baraga hosts Ontonagon.
– L’Anse entertains Westwood.
– Ewen-Trout Creek travels to Bessemer.

Conference champion Houghton dominates the WestPAC All-Conference Team. Sean Hyslop of the Gremlins was named Player of the Year, and Houghton’s Jared Lawson was named Coach of the Year.

Hunter Richards of the Gremlins was named to the First Team, along with Calumet’s Jack Hyrkas, Chad Raasio from Hancock, and Steven Nelson and AJ Weisnicht from West Iron County.

Houghton’s Joel Mewbourn and Justin Ruotsala were placed on the Second Team, along with Wyatt Loukus and Matt Ojala from Calumet, and Hans Stimac from Hancock. Brett Mattson and Trevor Uren from L’Anse received Honorable Mention votes.

The high school hockey regional tournament semifinals will be played tonight at the SDC. Houghton will face L’Anse at 6:00. Jeffers will take on Hancock at 8:00. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University softball team continues play in Clermont, Florida, on their annual early-spring trip. Yesterday, the Lions were hitless in a 13-0 loss to Saint Vincent College,  and lost either 14-0 or 15-0 (depending on which college’s website you believe) to Hanover College. Today, Finlandia faces Otterbein University at 9:00, and Catholic University of America at 11:00.

The Finlandia baseball team opens its southern trip at Fort Meyers today. The Lions will play two games against North Central University – at 9:00 and at noon.

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 last night. Petr Mrazek took the loss, stopping 28 of 33 shots in goal. The Wings will play at Chicago Sunday afternoon. Face-off is at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons dropped a 97-81 game to the San Antonio Spurs last night. The loss snapped Detroit’s four-game winning streak. Marcus Morris and Tobias Harris each scored 16. The Pistons visit the New York Knicks Saturday night. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

In Grapefruit League play, half of the Detroit Tigers couldn’t hold an early 7-0 lead, and fell to the New York Yankees 10-9 yesterday. Starter Mike Pelfrey pitched three perfect innings, and Bryan Holaday hit a grand slam. The other half of the Tigers scored four runs in the first inning, and five in the eighth, and defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-3. The Tigers host the Braves this afternoon at 1:00. Hear the game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 11-2 in an exhibition match yesterday. The Brewers open their Cactus League schedule today, with split-squad games against the Cubs and the Giants.
