High School
In high school hockey Saturday…
- Calumet clubbed Hancock 7-1, and earned the John Sherf trophy as champions of the Copper Island Classic. Six different Copper Kings scored, with Matt Frantti netting two goals, and Brady Boberg, Brendan Boberg, Liam Pomroy, Ben Anderson and Nathan Londo one each. Brady Boberg added two assists. Jackson Sinkowski scored the Bulldogs’ only goal in the third period. The Kings outshot the Bulldogs 44-27. Beau Jukuri earned the win in net. Calumet outscored Hancock 8-2 in the two-game series to win the Sherf trophy for the 31st time in the 49-year history of the series. Hear the game replay here.
- Houghton shaded Marquette 4-3 in overtime.
The remaining half of Michigan’s high school 11-player football titles were decided Saturday at Ford Field.
- In Division Seven, Millington stifled Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 24-0.
- In Division Three, Zeeland West outscored Detroit King 42-22.
- In Division Five, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep shut down Frankenmuth 42-7.
- In Division One, Detroit Cass Tech dispatched Hudsonville 42-20.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team used a late scoring surge to salvage a 2-2 tie at Bowling Green Saturday night. The Falcons claimed the bonus CCHA standings point in a post-game shootout. Stiven Sardarian and Isaac Gordon found the net in a 22-second span midway through the third period to knot the score. Derek Mullahy made 31 saves, as the Huskies outshot the Falcons 57-33.
The Northern Hockey squad dropped a 4-1 decision at Augustana Saturday evening. Brendan Poshak scored his first goal as a Wildcat. Ryan Ouellette made 25 saves, but took the loss in net.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team faded down the stretch, and suffered a 63-60 loss to 21st-ranked Concordia-St. Paul Saturday. The Huskies were outscored 26-14 in the final quarter. Maja Kozlowska led the Tech attack with 14 points.
The women’s team hosts Winona State this afternoon at 2:00.
The Northern Michigan men’s team cruised to a 70-58 victory over Concordia Saturday. Dylan Kuehl scored 26 for the Wildcats, and passed the 1,000 point mark for his career.
NHL
The Red Wings welcome the Canucks today, with coverage beginning at 12:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Patrick Kane is expected to return to the Detroit line-up Tuesday, after missing nearly two weeks with an upper body injury. Injured goaltender Alex Lyon is expected to be sidelined for at least the next few games.
NBA
The Pistons fell to the 76ers 111-96 Saturday night. After playing in Friday’s game, Cade Cunningham was held out of the Saturday contest, as he continue to recover from a hip injury. Malik Beasley led Detroit with 19 points.
The Pistons entertain the Bucks Tuesday.
NFL
In tonight’s NFL game, the Bills host the 49ers, with pregame at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Lions continue to juggle their roster to deal with a rash of injuries to their defense. Saturday, they claimed defensive lineman Myles Adams from the Seahawks’ practice squad. To open roster space, they waived wide receiver and return specialist Maurice Alexander.
The latest blow landed Saturday, when coach Dan Campbell announced that defensive tackle Makhi Wingo will miss the rest of the season, and will likely require knee surgery. He becomes the eighth front-seven player the Lions have lost to injury this year.
