Calumet Volleyball Wins Regional Crown – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School volleyball team claimed a regional title last evening, with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-18) victory over Roscommon. Unofficially, Allison Bjorn led the Copper Kings with 15 kills. Jackie Kiilunen added seven. The Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis in the state quarterfinals Tuesday at 6:00 at Sault Ste. Marie. The Gladiators defeated Beal City 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20) to win their regional title. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

Five of the remaining eight schools in Division Three are private schools.

In other volleyball results involving Upper Peninsula teams:
• In Division Four, Forest Park defeated Stephenson 3-0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-21). Newberry eliminated Onaway 3-0. The Trojans and Indians will meet in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
• In Division Two, Kingsford’s season ended with a 3-1 loss to Ludington.

The Lake Linden-Hubbell football team will make the long drive to Marion for an Eight-Player Division Two state semifinal tomorrow at 1:00. Deckerville and Adrian Lenawee Christian will play in the other semifinal.

• In Eight Player Division One, Pickford hosts Inland Lakes tomorrow.
• In Division Eight, Iron Mountain plays at Beal City tonight.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Bemidji State tonight and tomorrow night.

The Northern hockey team welcomes Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow.

College Volleyball

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball regular season wraps up this weekend.

Michigan Tech will play at Ferris State tonight, and Lake Superior State tomorrow.

Northern Michigan will play at Lake Superior State tonight, and Ferris State tomorrow.

College Football

Michigan Tech finishes its football season against Saginaw Valley State at home tomorrow at 1:00. 

NMU concludes its season at home against Northern State.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will host the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge this weekend. The Huskies will face William Jewell tonight at 6:00, and Lewis University tomorrow at 6:00. Northern Michigan will play Lewis today at 4:00, and William Jewell tomorrow at 4:00.

The Tech men’s team begins its campaign at the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament at Wisconsin Dells. The Huskies will play Missouri S and T tomorrow afternoon, and Upper Iowa Sunday afternoon. Northern will also be at that event, playing Upper Iowa tomorrow, and Missouri S and T Sunday.

College Soccer

Northern Michigan University will host both semifinals in the GLIAC soccer tournament today. The top-seeded Wildcats will face fifth-seed Ferris State at 3:00. Sixth-seed Parkside will play second-seed Grand Valley State at noon in the other semifinal.

NHL

The Red Wings lost 3-2 to the Canadiens in overtime last night. Christian Fischer and J.T. Compher scored for Detroit. James Reimer made 23 saves.

The Wings host the Blue Jackets tomorrow afternoon, with coverage at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons begin the NBA’s new In-Season Tournament tonight, when they host the 76ers. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Bears got past the Panthers 16-13. A long Carolina field goal attempt in the closing seconds that would have tied the game fell short.

The Packers visit the Steelers for a 1:00 game Sunday.

The Lions visit the Chargers for a 4:05 contest Sunday, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers have their new television play-by-play announcer. Jason Benetti will take over, after eight seasons calling games for the White Sox. He also describes some national games for Fox Sports. Benetti’s story is an inspirational one – he has become a top-shelf broadcaster despite having been diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child.
