Calumet Volleyball Unbeaten Streak Continues – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball yesterday…
• Houghton blanked Iron Mountain 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-16).
• Hancock cruised past Westwood 3-0.
• Calumet shut out Negaunee 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-10). The Copper Kings remain unbeaten in match play this season.
• Jeffers stopped L’Anse 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-10). Kaeda Rajala led the team with 11 kills and Mia Nordstrom had 7.
• Chassell fell to Bessemer 3-0.

NHL

The Red Wings open regular-season play at home against the Canadiens on Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons fell to the Thunder 115-99 in an exhibition last night. Killian Hayes scored 20 points off the bench to lead Detroit. Saddiq Bey added 19.

The Pistons host the Grizzlies in their final tune-up game tomorrow. Listen for selected Pistons games this season on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit’s Marvin Bagley III had to be helped off the court last night, after suffering a knee injury. He’ll be evaluated today.

MLB

The Divisional Playoff Series began yesterday.

In the American League…
• The Astros edged the Mariners 8-7.
• The Yankees downed the Guardians 4-1.

In the National League…
• The Phillies shaded the Braves 7-6.
• The Dodgers downed the Padres 5-3.

Both National League series continue today. Both American League sets will resume tomorrow.

The Tigers designated veteran right-hander Drew Hutchison for assignment yesterday. Hutchison made 18 starts for Detroit this season, finishing with a 3-9 record and a 4.53 ERA. Detroit also claimed utility player Jermaine Palacios off waivers from the Twins.

NFL

Another day, another kicker. The Lions have signed journeyman free agent Sam Ficken to their practice squad. Detroit becomes the eighth NFL team Ficken has played for since he joined the league in 2016. Over that time, he’s completed 35 of 49 field goal attempts.

Fishing

The Fishing Club at Michigan Tech will host a Walleye Fishing Tournament on Portage Lake Saturday. Fishing will be open from 7:30 until 12:30. The entry fee is $20. To get more information and sign up, call Jacob Mauer at 248-534-8062.
