in high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet remained unbeaten in match play, blanking Houghton 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-10). Helen Beiring had 14 kills and 18 digs for the Copper Kings. Laina Karieniemi had 25 assists. Kaylie Halonen had 15 digs and 3 aces.
• Hancock downed Gwinn 3-1.
• L’Anse dispatched Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 24-26, 25-20).
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost 3-0 (19-25, 8-25, 20-25) to Ironwood.
• Jeffers got past Ewen-Trout Creek 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 15-11). Mia Nordstrom had 15 kills for the Jets, and Kaeda Rajala had 14.
• Chassell fell to West Iron County 3-2 (27-25, 6-25, 10-25, 25-17, 11-15). For the Panthers, Trisha Pietila had 11 aces and 3 kills, Saige Hietala had 7 kills and 5 blocks, and Megan Holombo had 15 digs.
• Baraga shut down Watersmeet 3-0.

In volleyball tonight…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Baraga.
Houghton swept the Westwood Invitational cross country meet yesterday.
• On the boys side, the Gremlins edged out Negaunee by a single point to claim the team title. Isaiah Lawson of the Gremlins took second place individually, with Cyrus Hamlin fourth, and Birk Seagren fifth. Duane Anderson logged a seventh-place finish for Calumet.
• The Gremlin girls won an easy victory, with Hancock and Calumet tied for second. Houghton runners claimed five of the top nine positions, with Tessa Rautiola placing second, Lily Ross fourth, and Claire Filpus fifth. Calumet’s Milia Sturos came in seventh individually, and Ella Keranen led the Bulldogs with a 10th place finish.

Michigan Tech goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde has been named the GLIAC Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, after holding 22nd-ranked Northern Michigan scoreless on Friday.

NBA
The Pistons fell to the Knicks 117-96 in their preseason debut last evening. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 16 points. The Pistons continue their preseason campaign Friday in New Orleans.
MLB
The Tigers dropped both sides of their doubleheader against the Mariners last night, 7-6 and 9-6. In the opener, Spencer Torkelson and Victor Reyes homered for Detroit. Tied after nine, Riley Greene’s sacrifice fly gave Detroit a lead in the top of the 10th, but Seattle scored twice off Gregory Soto in the bottom of the inning to get the win. Kody Clemens hit a grand slam in the nightcap, and Torkelson hit his second homer of the night.
The Tigers conclude their season at Seattle this afternoon. Tyler Alexander will start against Marco Gonzales. Coverage will begin at 3:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers blanked the Diamondbacks 3-0. Eric Lauer tossed six no-hit innings, but was lifted as his pitch count approached 100. Garrett Mitchell and Luis Urías homered.
The Brewers close their season at home against the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Merrill Kelly.
NFL
After struggling last Sunday in his Detroit debut, the Lions have waived kicker Dominik Eberle. Injured Austin Seibert could be back for this week’s game. The Lions also signed Michael Badgley to their practice squad, a day after he was released by the Bears.
The Packers have signed linebacker Eric Wilson off the Saints’ practice squad.
