Calumet Volleyball in Regional Final Tonight – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

High school volleyball tournament regional finals will be played tonight…
• In Division Three, Calumet will face Roscommon at 7:00 at Manistique. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In other regional finals involving Upper Peninsula teams…
• In Division Four, Forest Park faces Stephenson.
• In Division Two, Kingsford takes on Ludington. 

The Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association has honored a number of local players on their Region One All-Region Team.
• From Houghton, Clea Ollanketo, Danicica Ryynanen, Brynn Arko, Laney Johnson and Sophia Neves.
• From Hancock, Brielle Kero and Brooke Koskela.
• From Calumet, Allison Bjorn, Caitlyn Strom, Jackie Kiilunen, Madelyn Torola and Laina Kariniemi. Calumet coach Kate Bonacorsi was named Coach of the Year.

Region One includes Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Marquette, Ontonagon and Dickinson Counties.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has added three new recruits for 2024.
• Ella Mason is a guard who averaged 20 points per game for Negaunee in her junior season, and was named Mid-Peninsula Conference Player of the Year.
• Kendall Standfest is a guard who averaged 17 points per game for Elk Rapids in her junior year.
• Kloe Zentkowski is a two-time All-Conference guard from Superior, Wisconsin.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Canadiens tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, we’ll join that game in progress after Calumet volleyball tonight on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons dropped a 120-118 nailbiter to the Bucks last night. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 33 points, and sank a three-pointer that pulled the Pistons to within a point with 40 seconds remaining. Marcus Sasser added 26. Ausar Thompson grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Pistons begin the NBA’s new In-Season Tournament tomorrow, when they host the 76ers. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit remains depleted because of a number of injuries. Bojan Bogdanovic is out with a calf strain, and Isaiah Livers with an ankle sprain. Neither will be back for at least a couple of weeks. Monte Morris is sidelined with a quad strain, Alec Burks with a forearm contusion, and Joe Harris with a bad shoulder. Jaden Ivey missed last night’s game with an illness. Jalen Duren returned to the lineup, but is still nursing a sore ankle.

NFL

In tonight’s NFL contest, the Bears host the Panthers. With Justin Fields still out with a thumb injury, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent will start for Chicago. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift. Television viewing will be restricted to Amazon Prime subscribers.

MLB

Veteran infield coach Joey Cora is joining the Tigers’ staff. He’ll take the spot vacated by the departure of Alfredo Amezaga.

Sled Hockey

Equipment Loans of the Keweenaw will host an introductory sled hockey event Saturday. All community members are invited. Sled hockey can be played by anyone, including many who have disabilities. Equipment will be provided – bring your own helmets, gloves and elbow pads if you have them. There is no charge, but a silent auction and 50/50 raffle will be held to raise money to help purchase a track roller for a local high school wheelchair athlete. The event starts at 2:00 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Sign up in advance here. Learn more about the event and see items up for bid here. Following the on-ice session, at 5:30 there will be a meeting for anyone interested in joining the local sled hockey team.
