Calumet Volleyball Falls in Quarterfinals – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School volleyball team’s fine season ended with a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 11-25) loss to Traverse City St. Francis in the division three state tournament quarterfinals last night. The Copper Kings fell behind in the first set, but came back to take the lead on a nine-point service run by Jackie Kiilunen. Calumet opened an early second set lead, but the Gladiators came back, and scored the final six points to close it out. The Kings played from behind through the third set, but nearly overcame a late five-point deficit. St. Francis dominated the final set, with Calumet earning just three points off their own service. The Gladiators will face Cass City in the semifinals Thursday.

Forest Park dispatched Newberry 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15) in the division four quarterfinals. The Trojans will take on Leland in the semifinals Friday.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team opens the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament this evening. The fourth-seeded Huskies will host fifth-seed Northern Michigan at 6:00.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team plays at Roosevelt University in Chicago tonight.

The NMU men’s team entertains Lakeland University this evening.

NHL

The Red Wings are in Stockholm, where they’ll meet the Senators tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

This year’s class was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday. The new members include goaltender Mike Vernon, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1997.

NBA

The Pistons’ losing streak reached nine games, with a 126-120 loss to the Hawks in another NBA In-Season Tournament game last night. Marvin Bagley III led Detroit with 22 points, and 11 rebounds. Ausar Thompson added 21 points, and collected eight rebounds.

Tournament play continues with a game Friday night at Cleveland. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In advance of the Rule Five Draft, the Tigers protected pitcher Wilmer Flores and catcher Dillon Dingler by adding them to their 40-man roster yesterday. To make room, Detroit designated pitchers Brenan Hanifee and Freddy Pacheco for assignment.

Running

The Baraga cross country and track and field programs will stage the second annual Turkey Trot 5k Saturday. Registration opens at 9:00 am, and the race begins at 10:00 at the school. The cost is $25 per person with a t-shirt, $10 without a t-shirt, or $15 for the kids one-mile fun run (including a t-shirt). For more information, click here.
