The Milwaukee Brewers split their doubleheader against the Saint Louis Cardinals yesterday, taking the first game 2-1, and dropping the nightcap 3-2. Both games went extra innings.
The first game was scoreless through the regulation seven frames. The Cardinals took the lead with a run off Freddy Peralta in the top of the eighth. Ryan Braun tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, and Keston Hiura’s sacrifice fly drove in the game-winner. Josh Lindblom threw five shutout innings.
In the second contest, the Crew scored twice in the fourth on a Jedd Gyorko homer. Saint Louis got one back off starter Corbin Burnes in the fifth, then tied the game with a run off Eric Yardley in the seventh. Paul DeJong’s two-out single off Justin Topa in the top of the ninth plated the winning run for the Cards. Topa had been brought up as the extra man for the doubleheader.
The Brewers host the Cardinals in a single game tonight. Brett Anderson will start against Jack Flaherty.
Milwaukee brought reliever Ray Black off the injured list yesterday, and claimed outfielder Billy McKinney off waivers from the Blue Jays. To make room on the roster, they designated infielder Ronny Rodriguez and pitcher Trey Supak for assignment. Supak was a surprise – he’s one of the Brewers’ top-20 prospects, and could be claimed by another team off waivers.
