High School
In the high school volleyball tournament regional semifinals last night…
– In Class C , Calumet advanced with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-14) sweep over St. Ignace. Leah Bjorn led the offense with 19 kills. Amber Johnson recorded 26 digs. The Copper Kings will face West Iron County in the regional final tomorrow night at 7:00 at Gladstone. Calumet defeated the Wykons twice during the regular season by identical 3-1 scores.
– In Class D at Westwood, Lake Linden-Hubbell’s tournament run ended with a 3-0 (19-25, 15-25, 20-25) loss to Munising. Maija Codere had seven kills for the Lakes, and Joslynn Perala had 13 digs.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team tuned up for the regular season with an 80-61 exhibition victory over Gogebic Community College last night. The Samsons controlled the opening minutes, but the Lions regrouped, tied the game by halftime, and took control by scoring the first 16 points of the second half. Austin Carlson led Finlandia with 21 points and 19 rebounds.
Five Finlandia University women’s soccer players have been honored by the All-American Collegiate Athletic Association. Kelsi McDermid was placed on the all-league first team, and was named Freshman of the Year. Molly Berg from Hancock, Aylee Desellier and Kallin Morris were named to the second team, and Zulieki Wight earned honorable mention votes.
MTU
A former MTU hockey player will be representing his native Canada at the upcoming Karjala Cup Tournament. Geoff Kinrade played 150 games for the Huskies from 2005 to 2009. He currently skates for HC Kunlun Red Star, the only Chinese team in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League. The Karjala Cup is an Olympic warm-up event, which will begin next weekend in Helsinki, Finland, and Biel, Switzerland.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Calgary tomorrow night.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Indiana Pacers tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
Multiple media sources are reporting that the Detroit Tigers top farm team will have a new manager next season. Doug Mientkiewicz will take the helm of the Toledo Mud Hens, replacing Mike Rojas. Mientkiewicz was a first baseman for the Minnesota Twins, where he played for new Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire.
Other Detroit farm teams will also get new managers. Former Detroit catcher Lance Parrish will manage the West Michigan Whitecaps. Whitecaps manager Mike Rabelo will move up to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Lakeland manager Andrew Graham will step up the Erie Seawolves. The Tigers have not confirmed the moves.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers will finish the season without tackle Bryan Bulaga. Team officials confirmed yesterday that Bulaga suffered a torn ACL during Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions. His backup, Justin McCray, hurt his ankle on the game’s final play, and is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Bears.
Youth Hockey
There will be one final USA Hockey Level One Officiating Seminar at the Calumet Colosseum. The session will begin Sunday morning at 8:00. Anyone interested in becoming a youth hockey official is encouraged to attend. That includes teens who would like to ref games for younger players. You must sign up in advance at the USA Hockey website.
