Calumet Takes Volleyball Regional – Friday Sports Wrap

The Calumet High School volleyball team defeated Rudyard 3-1 in the regional final of the state tournament last night. The Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 7:00 at Charlevoix.

The Calumet High School football team entertains Maple City Glen Lake in a Division Six regional football contest tomorrow afternoon. Our pregame coverage will begin around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Michigan Tech hockey team entertains Lake Superior State this weekend. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight and tomorrow night at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams begin their seasons tomorrow. The women’s squad tips off at Minnesota-Duluth. The men’s team will be in Romeoville, Illinois for the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge. They’ll face Lewis tomorrow night, and Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team entertains Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow night.

The Wildcats football team concludes its season on the road at Tiffin.

NMU Logo HeadThe NMU men’s basketball team will join Michigan Tech at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Illinois. The Wildcats will face Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow night, and Lewis Sunday. The Northern women’s team will play at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge at Grand Valley State. They’ll face Truman State University tomorrow night, and Quincy University on Sunday.

Marquette High School standout Amber Huebner will play college hoops at Northern. She signed an early letter of intent yesterday. The Wildcats also got a commitment from Lexi Smith, who averages 28 points per game for Northland Pines.

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team will host Lake Forest College this afternoon. Faceoff is at 1:00 at the Houghton County Arena. The women’s team will welcome Marian University Sunday at 4:00. The men’s hockey team hosts Concordia-Wisconsin tonight at 7:15 and tomorrow at 4:00.

Jimmy Howard made 36 saves, as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 last night. After losing his starting job to Petr Mrazek last year, he’s now reclaimed the number-one spot. Dylan Larkin gave the Wings a good start by scoring 32 seconds into the game. Brendan Smith and Steve Ott also scored, and Henrik Zetterberg had two assists. The Wings skate at Montreal tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Justin Verlander was named Tiger of the Year yesterday by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. It’s his third such honor. Miguel Cabrera received another Silver Slugger Award as the top hitter at his position. It’s his seventh in his career, and fifth with the Tigers.

In last night’s NFL game, the Baltimore Ravens crushed the Cleveland Browns 28-7.

The Green Bay Packers visit the Tennessee Titans for a 1:00 game on Sunday. The Detroit Lions have the weekend off.
