Calumet Takes Regional Volleyball Title – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team swept to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-22) victory over West Iron County in the state tournament regional final last night. Leah Bjorn had 20 kills and 25 digs for the Copper Kings. Brea Johnson added 21 assists, and Amber Johnson collected 28 digs. It’s the sixth straight regional crown for Calumet. The Copper Kings will face Houghton Lake in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 7:00 at Munising.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team will host Adrian College tonight at 7:30, and Trine University tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 at the Houghton County Arena. The women’s team will entertain St. Norbert College this afternoon at 2:00, and tomorrow at 12:30. Broadcast coverage of today’s women’s game will begin at 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift, and 993TheLift.com.

Both Finlandia basketball teams will host Mid Michigan Community College for exhibition matches tonight. The women’s game starts at 5:30, and the men’s contest at 7:30. Clara Loukus from Calumet and Maija Sebbas from Hancock now play for the Mid Michigan Community College women’s team, and former Calumet standout Ellen Twardzik is an assistant coach.

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team is in Pepper Pike, Ohio, to open its season at the Regional Challenge at Ursuline College. The Huskies will face Davis and Elkins College tonight, and the host Ursuline Arrows tomorrow.

The Tech volleyball team wraps up its regular season with home games against Northwood this evening at 5:00, and Ferris State tomorrow at 3:00.

The MTU hockey team will host 20th-ranked Northern Michigan University tonight at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Those two teams will play again tomorrow night in Marquette.

The Huskies football team closes its season tomorrow at home against Ferris State. Kickoff is at noon at Sherman Field.

The Northern Michigan University football team concludes its season tomorrow at home against Northwood.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers open their Great Lakes Hockey League campaign with games against the Bears in Fond du Lac tonight and tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ two-game winning streak ended with a 6-3 loss to the Calgary Flames last night. Martin Frk, Frans Nielsen and Anthony Mantha scored for Detroit. Petr Mrazek took the loss in net. The Wings return home to host the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow night. Pregame begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Atlanta Hawks tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Arizona Cardinals 22-16.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions entertain the Cleveland Browns in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers play the Bears in Chicago in a 1:00 game.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have signed a 25-year deal to keep their spring training headquarters in the Phoenix suburb of Marydale. The agreement calls for Milwaukee to invest more than 40-million dollars to upgrade the facility.
