Calumet Takes First Gibson Cup Contest – Saturday Sports Wrap

Gibson Cup

The Calumet Wolverines opened the Gibson Cup series with a 7-1 victory over the Portage Lake Pioneers last night. The Wolverines broke out to an early lead, with first-period goals by Eric Bausano and Logan Rastello. Scott Loukus scored twice in the second period, and Brent Loukus and Rory Anderson each added a goal. Ian Carroll got the win in net.

Calumet could retain the historic cup with a win in game two tonight. The puck drops at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. Limited spectator tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Broadcast coverage will start at 7:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. If the Pioneers win tonight, game three will be played Tuesday at the Colosseum.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team dropped the first set, then turned up the pressure and earned a 3-1 victory over Northern Michigan University last night. Anna Joynas led Tech with 22 kills. Laura De Marchi had 51 assists, and became the Huskies’ all-time career leader. She also passed the 1,000 career digs mark. The Huskies and Wildcats close their regular seasons tonight in Marquette. The winner of tonight’s game will claim the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title, and get the top seed in the upcoming tournament.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will play at Saginaw Valley State today.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team dropped the first game of their doubleheader at Wisconsin-Platteville yesterday, 12-6. The second game was stopped in the eighth inning because of darkness, with the Lions trailing 8-2. It will be completed today, before the teams play another scheduled doubleheader. Nik Geiser set a new Lions career record for putouts, passing the old mark held by Cody Mahler.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Tampa Bay Lightning this afternoon.

The Wings have placed forward Evgeny Svechnikov on waivers again. Any team can claim him by noon today. If he clears waivers, he can be assigned to the taxi squad or the Grand Rapids Griffins. No one claimed Svechnikov the first time he was waived, earlier this season.

NBA

The Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off.

The Tigers host the Cleveland Indians this afternoon. Julio Teheran will face Zach Plesac. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers entertain the Minnesota Twins. Corbin Burnes will start against José Berríos.

Major League Baseball is looking for a new home for this summer’s All-Star Game. The summer classic had been schedule to take place in Atlanta. Officials announced yesterday that it will be relocated, as a protest against restrictive new voting limitations adopted by the state of Georgia.
