Calumet Sweeps to Copper Island Classic Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night, Calumet blanked Hancock 6-0 in the second and final game of the Copper Island Classic. After a scoreless first period, Tanner Rowe, Alex Mattila and Scott Loukus found the net in the second frame, and Seth Coppo, Rylan Anderson and Dean Loukus capped the scoring in the third. Alex Studebaker stopped 16 shots to earn the shutout. The Copper Kings win the total-goals Classic 14-1.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team stunned fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire 1-0 yesterday. Cale Markham scored the game’s only goal early in the second period, off a pass from Hunter Kero. Marcus Gloss made 40 saves to earn the shutout, including three in the final minute, after the BluGolds added an extra attacker. It’s the first win for the Lions over UW-Eau Claire since 2002.

The women’s hockey team has the weekend off.

The Lions women’s basketball team lost 69-42 to Wisconsin-Lacrosse in their opening game at the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic in LaCrosse last evening. Taylor Pertile scored 14 for FinnU. The Lions will face Wisconsin-Platteville today.

The men’s basketball team is off this weekend.

Gavin Gould’s hat trick powered the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 7-2 victory, and a weekend sweep of the University of Alaska last night. Gould scored the Huskies’ first three goals of the evening. Brian Halonen, Alex Smith, Jake Lucchini and Tyler Rockwell added insurance tallies. Matt Jurusik made 27 saves.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team tied the Cappo Cup series with 2-1 victory over 20th-ranked Lake Superior State University last night. The winner of the Cup will be decided when the teams meet for two games in Marquette late in February.

The MTU men’s basketball team overcame an 11-point halftime deficit, and defeated Gannon University 50-43 to win the Gary Miller Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania, yesterday. Brian Heath scored 18 points, and Owen White added 10 off the bench. Heath was named the Most Valuable Player, and White was placed on the All-Tournament Team.

The MTU women’s team opened the University of Southern Indiana Thanksgiving Classic in Evansville yesterday with a 73-60 loss to Bellarmine University. Ellie Welsh led Tech with 15 points. The Huskies will face the host team today.

The Northern Michigan University women’s team defeated the University of Jamestown 54-45 at the Radisson Classic in Saint Paul yesterday.

The NMU men’s team is off this weekend.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Calumet Wolverines 3-2 last night. Those teams will play again tonight at 5:00 at the Colosseum.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres last night. Dylan Larkin scored in the second period for Detroit, and Anthony Mantha forced overtime with a third-period goal. Sam Reinhart’s tally in the seventh round of the shootout ended the game. Jimmy Howard made 33 saves. The Wings entertain the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow night.
