Calumet Swamps U-D Jesuit – Saturday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey yesterday…
– Hancock fell to Bay Port 4-1.
– Calumet mercied U of D-Jesuit 8-0. Tanner Rowe scored a pair of early goals. Scott Loukus, Brent Loukus, Nick Djerf, Gabe Coppo, Nolan Jenich and Alex Mattila also found the net. Alex Studebaker made 21 saves. The Miner’s Helmet series between those teams concludes tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Jeffers v Merrill/East at the Merrill/East Invitational in Wisconsin – not reported. Rhinelander defeated Medford 5-3 in the other semi-final, so the Jets will face one of those two teams today.

Also today, Houghton entertains Bay Port at 1:00.

In boys basketball last evening, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Bessemer 65-57.

In boys action this afternoon, Chassell plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell. That’s a make-up game from January 7th. The JV game will start at 1:00, and the varsity will tip off at 2:30.

In girls basketball last evening…
– Houghton fell to West Iron County 62-45.
– Hancock got past Iron Mountain 37-32. D’Andra Kero scored 15 points for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet defeated Gwinn 48-33. Marybeth Halonen led the Copper Kings with 16 points. Elli Djerf added 11.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell stopped Wakefield-Marenisco 49-36.
– Baraga shut down Jeffers 51-27.
– Ontonagon smothered Bessemer 59-16.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team overcame an early deficit, and defeated the College of Saint Scholastica 7-4 last night. Cale Markham had a hat trick for the Lions, who also got goals from Connor Hannon, Teddy Randell, Blake Peavey and Alex Rezansoff. Paul Lichner had three assists, and Marcus Gloss made 27 saves. The Lions will entertain Northland College this evening at 7:15.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team entertains Adrian College this afternoon and tomorrow. Our broadcast of today’s game will begin at 2:55 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at Gogebic Community College today.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 4-3 in overtime at Bemidji State University last night. Playing in sub-zero temperatures on an outdoor rink, the Huskies held an early advantage, thanks to goals from Brian Halonen, Todd Kiilunen and Gavin Gould. Kiilunen’s was his first as a Husky. The Beavers tied the game early in the second period, and netted the game-winner three minutes into overtime after a scoreless third stanza. Those teams play again this evening in Bemidji. Tonight’s game will be indoors.

The NMU hockey squad has the weekend off.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will entertain Davenport University today. The women’s contest tips off at 1:00, and the men’s game will start at 3:00.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams will host Grand Valley State today.

Former University of Michigan coach Red Berenson will receive this year’s John MacInnes Award from the American Hockey Coaches Association. The award is given annually to someone who has shown great concern for amateur hockey and youth programs. It’s named after the legendary Michigan Tech coach.

GLHL
The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the West Bend Bombers last night was not reported. The Pioneers visit the Fond du Lac Bears tonight.

The Calumet Wolverines fell 5-3 at Fond du Lac last night, and play at West Bend this evening.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings began a western trip with a 6-4 loss to the Calgary Flames. Dylan Larkin scored twice for Detroit. Anthony Mantha and Mike Green also found the net. Jimmy Howard stopped 30 shots, and took the loss. The Wings visit the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow afternoon. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons edged the Miami Heat 98-93 last night. Blake Griffin just missed a triple-double, with 32 points, nine assists, and 11 rebounds. Andre Drummond left the game early after taking a blow to the face. Ish Smith also exited early, with tightness in the torn muscle that recently forced him to miss 19 games. Both will be evaluated today. The Pistons host the Sacramento Kings tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The NFL Conference Championships will be decided tomorrow. The Los Angeles Rams will face the New Orleans Saints for the NFC title at 3:05. The New England Patriots will play the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC crown at 6:40. Hear both games on 99.3 The Lift.
