– Houghton travels to Kingsford.
– Hancock, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers, Baraga, and L’Anse compete at the Hancock Invitational, which will be held at Baraga High School.
In high school golf, Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, and L’Anse tee off at the Kiwanis Negaunee Invitational.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers built an early lead, but couldn’t hold on to it, and lost 7-6 to the Texas Rangers last night. Michael Fulmer took a 5-1 advantage into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Rangers score four times off him and Alex Wilson to tie the contest. After Detroit regained the lead with a run in the top of the seventh, Texas scored twice off Buck Farmer and Daniel Stumpf in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good. Leonys Martin homered for Detroit.
The Tigers continue that series at Texas tonight. Mike Fiers will pitch against Mike Minor. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
After last night’s game, Wilson was placed on the disabled list. He hurt his foot while covering first base on an infield single. Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann was also added to the DL, with a shoulder issue. Because of an off day, his next turn in the rotation can be skipped. Detroit called up reliever Zac Reininger and infielder Pete Kozma from Toledo.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Cleveland Indians tonight. Wade Miley will start against Corey Kluber.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night…
– Washington advanced with a 2-1 overtime victory over Pittsburgh. The Capitals won that series 4-2, and will face Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference finals.
– Nashville shut out Winnipeg 4-0. That series is tied 3-3, and will be decided Thursday night. The winner will take on Las Vegas in the Western Conference finals.
NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– Cleveland advanced to the Eastern Conference finals by defeating Toronto 128-93. The Cavaliers swept that series 4-0.
– Philadelphia defeated Boston 103-92. The Celtics lead that series 3-1.
Tonight…
– Utah plays at Houston. The Rockets lead that series 3-1.
– New Orleans tips off at Golden State. The Warriors lead that set 3-1.
The Detroit Pistons are beginning the search for new leadership. The club announced yesterday that Stan Van Gundy will not return next season as coach and head of basketball operations. Team owner Tom Gores credited Van Gundy with rebuilding the team culture, but said that the lack of progress over the past two seasons indicated a change was needed. Van Gundy had one year remaining on his contract.
