Calumet Softball Sweeps LL-H – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Hancock dropped both of its games at Iron Mountain, 9-7 and 12-2.

On the baseball schedule today…
• Calumet visits Gogebic.
• Jeffers journeys to Iron Mountain.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Pellston.

On the baseball schedule tomorrow…
• Calumet travels to Gladstone.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at a tournament at Hillman.

In softball yesterday…
• Calumet took two at Lake Linden-Hubbell, 17-2 and 12-2. Emily Peterson was the winning pitcher in the first game, and also had two hits. Emma Karjula earned the win in the nightcap. Ashlee Johnson had two singles and a double for the Copper Kings, and Laura Giachino two doubles and a triple. Kara Kinnunen and Emily Jokela each had a single and a double for the Lakes.
• Hancock defeated L’Anse 17-2 and 21-1.
• Baraga v Gogebic – postponed because of field conditions.

On the softball schedule today…
• L’Anse plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
• Calumet visits Baraga.

At the Baraga Invitational yesterday – no report.

The Houghton and Calumet boys golf teams will be among those competing at the Norway Invitational today.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team plays doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Eau Claire tomorrow and Sunday.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team wraps up its season at home against Gogebic Community College tomorrow afternoon. Doubleheader coverage will begin at 3:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions have introduced a new player for next season. Marissa Martinez is a catcher from Robstown, Texas.

NBA

Opening-round NBA tournament play continued last evening.

In the Eastern Conference…
• The Philadelphia 76ers routed the Toronto Raptors 132-97. Philly takes the series 4-2.

In the Western Conference…
• The Phoenix Suns dispatched the New Orleans Pelicans 115-109. Phoenix wins that series 4-2.
• The Dallas Mavericks shaded the Utah Jazz 98-96. Dallas claims that set 4-2.

In the Western Conference tonight…
• The Minnesota Timberwolves host the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis leads that series 3-2.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings close their season tonight against the Devils in New Jersey. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost their fifth straight game yesterday, 7-1 to the Minnesota Twins. Tarik Skubal gave up six runs over five innings, but only three were earned, as the Tigers committed four errors.

The Tigers open a series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles tonight. Tyler Alexander will start against Tyler Anderson. Coverage will begin at 9:50 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers completed a series sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 3-2 victory yesterday. Freddy Peralta tossed six shutout innings. Andrew McCutcheon homered.

The Brewers host the Chicago Cubs this evening. Adrian Houser will start against Kyle Hendricks.

NFL

The Jacksonville Jaguars made University of Georgia defensive end Travon Walker the first overall pick in last night’s NFL draft.

At number two, the Detroit Lions chose former University of Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who grew up in southeast Michigan. Detroit then traded up to get Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams with the 12th selection. That pick came from the Minnesota Vikings, and also came with Minnesota’s second-round pick, at number 46. Detroit gave up the late first-round pick they got from the Los Angeles Rams in the Matthew Stafford trade at number 32, along with their second-round pick at number 34, and a third-round pick at number 66.

The Green Bay Packers used the 22nd pick, which they acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders in the Davante Adams trade, to take University of Georgia linebacker Quay Walker. They then used their own pick at number 24 to select Georgia defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt.

Rounds two and three of the draft will be held tonight. The Lions have one selection in each round. The Packers have two picks in the second round, and one in the third.
