High School Football – Calumet Reaches Playoffs

On the final night of the high school football season…
– Calumet claimed a playoff berth with a 47-38 victory at Gladstone. The Braves scored on their first possession. Calumet responded with a touchdown, and then another after recovering a Gladstone fumble. Gladstone surged back into the lead, but the Copper Kings scored late in the first half to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room. Calumet scored twice more to open a 20 point lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Braves closed the gap a bit when Justin Jurek ran for his fourth touchdown with 5:45 remaining. Calumet added an insurance score with 52-seconds to go on Kaden Kangas’ third touchdown run. Down by 21 points, Gladstone didn’t give up. Tyler Wells broke loose for a 55-yard scoring run with 10 seconds remaining. Gladstone then recovered an onside kick, and Wells connected with Jurek for a 52-yard scoring pass as time expired. Robert Erkkila also scored three times for Calumet. The win guarantees the kings a spot in the playoffs. We’ll cover all the Copper Kings’ playoff games on KBear 102.3, or one of our sister stations.

– Thomas Schmidt ran for five touchdowns as the Houghton Gremlins rolled to a 62-23 victory in the 62nd Copper Bowl Friday night. Schmidt opened the scoring with a 65 yard sweep, but Hancock answered with a 50-yard run by Chase Anderson. At the end of the first half the Bulldogs were only down by six, but lost their quarterback on the final defensive stand.  Lyle Johnson would not return and Hancock could not move the ball in the second half.
