Calumet faces Cranbrook for the Division Three state hockey title this afternoon.
The Copper Kings advanced with a 3-0 shutout of Chelsea yesterday. Caden Lehto scored the only goal the Copper Kings would need in the first period. After a scoreless second frame, Seth Coppo found the net early in the third, then Jackson Rilei sealed the win. Elliot Sturos had two assists. Aksel Loukus stopped 23 shots to earn the shutout in net.
Cranbrook defeated Flint Powers Catholic 4-1 in yesterday’s other semifinal.

In girls tournament basketball last night…
• In Division Three, Calumet claimed a district title by defeating Negaunee 51-36. Elli Djerf led a balanced Copper Kings attack with 14 points, and Jana Loukus added 13. The unbeaten Copper Kings will face unbeaten Menominee in the regional semifinal Monday. We’ll broadcast the game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The Maroons defeated West Iron County 57-23 to claim their district title. Saint Ignace and Alcona will meet in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Four, District 98, Baraga won the title by defeating Ontonagon 51-43. In Division Four, District 97. Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Ironwood 65-40 to claim the title. The Panthers and Vikings will play their regional semifinal game Monday at 7:00 at Jeffers High School.

• In Division Four, District 98, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City faces Chassell this afternoon at 2:00 at Chassell.
• In Division Four, District 97, Ewen-Trout Creek and Bessemer will tip off this evening in Bessemer.

College Hockey
Lake Superior State University lost 5-1 to Massachusetts in the opening round of the NCAA hockey tournament last night. In other highlights from the tournament’s opening day, Bemidji State upset top-seeded Wisconsin 6-3. The Beavers will face UMass for the Bridgeport regional title this afternoon. The University of Michigan and Notre Dame dropped out because of COVID-19 issues.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team shut down Grand Valley State 3-0 last night. Olivia Ghormley had 18 kills. Laura Di Marchi had 45 assists, and Megan Utlak had 27 digs. Those teams play again this afternoon in Allendale. The 20th-ranked Huskies have won six straight matches.
College Soccer
The MTU soccer team plays at Northern Michigan University tomorrow.
College Baseball
The Finlandia baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Whitewater yesterday, 14-0 and 10-0. Those games were originally scheduled to be played today, but were moved up because of rain in the forecast.

College Basketball
Former Northern Michigan University basketball coach Stan Albeck has died. Albeck led the Wildcats from 1957 to 1968, when they played in the NAIA. He compiled a record of 178 wins and 77 losses. He went on to become head coach of the ABA’s Denver Rockets, and the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, New Jersey Nets and Chicago Bulls. Albeck was named to the NMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. Stan Albeck was 89 years old.

The Detroit Red Wings host the Columbus Blue Jackets this afternoon. Coverage begins at 2:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons dropped a 113-111 heartbreaker to Blake Griffin and the Brooklyn Nets last night. Jerami Grant led Detroit with 19 points. Corey Joseph, playing in his first game as a Piston, had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but missed a layup. Griffin, who is working his way into playing condition, scored 17 in 20 minutes.

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed running back Aaron Jones.
MLB
In Grapefruit League play, the Detroit Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 yesterday afternoon. Opening day starter Matthew Boyd pitched into the sixth inning, gave up two runs and struck out six. Robbie Grossman homered.
The Tigers face the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. Julio Teheran will start for Detroit.
The Tigers’ starting rotation is set for the beginning of the regular season. Yesterday, manager A.J. Hinch said Casey Mize will be the fifth starter, joining Matthew Boyd, Julio Teheran, José Ureña and Tarik Skubal. Spencer Turnbull remains in COVID-19 protocol, and will open the season on the disabled list. Michael Fulmer will begin the season in the bullpen.
In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago White Sox 7-5 yesterday. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth inning, and was charged with five runs. Keston Hiura homered.
The Brewers will play the Kansas City Royals this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff is scheduled to start.
