Calumet Nears Playoff Berth – Saturday Sports Wrap

In high school football Friday night…
Calumet Copper Kings Logo– Calumet closed in on a playoff berth by trouncing Ironwood 42-8. The Copper Kings scored on their first six possessions, before turning the game over to the reserves late in the second quarter. Tyler Loukus ran for three touchdowns. Robert Erkkila rushed for 184 yards on 13 carries, and found the endzone twice. The Copper Kings’ defense held the Ironwood to negative-10 yards of total offense in the first half. The Red Devils finished with 81 yards offense, compared to Calumet’s 338. The Copper Kings could lock up a playoff berth with a victory at Gladstone Friday night. L'Anse Purple Hornets Logo– L’Anse spotted Northland Pines a 23-point lead… then wound losing a 35-34 heartbreaker at Volunteer Field. The Eagles scored all their points in the first half. The Purple Hornets scored twice in the third quarter to close the gap, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Brandon Kemppainen scored four touchdowns for the Hornets. To reach the playoffs, L’Anse would need to beat Munising Friday night, and hope they have enough playoff points to get in with five victories.
– West Iron County clinched its second-straight WestPAC title with a 46-6 victory over Hancock.
Houghton Gremlins Feature– Houghton ended Baraga’s official season with a 26-0 victory at the Osterman Athletic Complex. It was the last 11-man game for the Vikings, who play an eight-man exhibition against Ontonagon next Friday, and move to the eight-man division next season. Houghton and Hancock will wrap up their seasons Friday night in the Copper Bowl game at Alumni Field. Our pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

– Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts North Dickinson for Parents Day. Our pregame coverage begins at 1:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In eight-man action, Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon. It will be the first time since Ewen moved to the eight-man division at the end of the 2010 season that the Panthers will play a local opponent.

In high school cross country, the Upper Peninsula Championship will be run today at the Gentz Homestead Golf Course in Harvey. You can link to video coverage of the meet here.

In high school volleyball today, Houghton, Calumet, Hancock, L’Anse, Baraga, and Chassell will be among the teams playing at the Houghton Invitational.

The unbeaten Michigan Tech football team hosts Grand Valley State today. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech hockey team has the weekend off.

Lexi Herrewig’s goal in the 84th minute lifted the Huskies’ soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Findlay Friday night. Jenna Phelps earned her third shutout in goal. Tech will entertain Tiffin Sunday at noon. Link to video highlights of Friday night’s game here.

The Tech volleyball team opened play at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover at Aurora, Illinois Friday with a 3-1 loss to Missouri S&T. The Huskies face Lewis this morning, and Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon.

The Huskies women’s tennis team plays at Lake Superior State this morning.

NMU Football Hosts Wayne State
NMU Athletics LogoThe Northern Michigan University football team entertains Wayne State today . The Wildcats are still looking for their first victory of the season.

The Wildcats’ hockey team stunned 18th-ranked Wisconsin 2-0 Friday night. Northern faces the Badgers again tonight at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Finlandia LionsFinlandia Volleyball Sweeps Mount Mary Triangular
At the Mount Mary Triangular on Friday, the Finlandia volleyball team defeated the host Blue Angels 3-1, then got past North Central 3-2. The Lions head to Chicago today for a triangular at Illinois Tech. They’ll play the host team, and Moody Bible Institute.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team entertains Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow. The game begins at 1:00 at McAfee Field.

NHL – Red Wings Defeat Leafs
Red Wings LogoHenrik Zetterburg assisted on each Detroit goal, as the Red Wings skated past the Maple Leafs 4-1 Friday night in Toronto. Johan Franzen scored twice, and Jimmy Howard stopped 24 shots. The same two teams play again tonight, in Detroit. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Wings have signed prospect Tyler Bertuzzi to a three-year contract. Bertuzzi was Detroit’s second-round pick in the 2013 draft. He’s 19 years old, and is playing for the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League. He is the nephew of former Red Wing Todd Bertuzzi.

The Lions host the Saints tomorrow. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers entertain the Panthers. That’s also a 1:00 start time.

The Pistons lost a 98-87 NBA preseason game to the Magic Friday night. Detroit spotted Orlando an early 19-point lead, and couldn’t close the gap. The Pistons will host the Hawks in exhibition play tonight. We will carry select Pistons games this season on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Keweenaw Cup Cyclocross Races will be held this weekend. The Downtown Hoedown will take place today in Copper Harbor. The Top of the World Smackdown will be held tomorrow at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Races are open to everyone, and prizes will be awarded in five divisions. Defending champion David Higgins leads the Lake Superior Performance Rally after the first 10 stages. Higgins has already wrapped up the Rally America season title. The local team of Adam Yeoman and Jordan Schulze was running third when they were forced out of the race by a blown engine during stage six.
