Calumet Muscles Out Playoff Win; Tech Hockey Whips Badgers – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
The Calumet Copper Kings opened the high school football Division Six playoffs last night with a heartstopping 6-0 win over the Westwood Patriots. The contest was scoreless until the final play of the third quarter, when Matt Ojala made a diving catch of a Brent Loukus pass for the game’s only score. The Calumet defense held tough, even though Westwood led the Kings in total offense and time of possession. The Copper Kings’ next opponent will be the winner of today’s game between Elk Rapids and Traverse City Saint Francis. We’ll broadcast the district final next week on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In other games of regional interest…
– In Division Eight, Ishpeming routed Gwinn 52-6, and West Iron County shut down Rogers City 28-8. The Hematites and the Wykons will meet for the district title next weekend.
– In Division Seven, Iron Mountain entertains Oscoda this afternoon.
– In Division Four, Escanaba hosts Ludington this afternoon.
– In eight-man Division One, Pickford blanked Fife Lake Forest Area 51-0. The Panthers will face Suttons Bay next week.
– In eight-man Division Two, Forest Park eliminated North Central 36-24. Rapid River edged Engadine 20-18. The Trojans and Rockets will play for the district title next week. Cedarville ousted Hillman 44-6, and will play the winner of today’s game between Kinde North Huron and Posen next week.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 5-0 loss at Wisconsin-Whitewater last night. The Lions finish with a record of 1-13-1.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team concluded its best season ever with a 6-0 loss at Adrian College last night. The Lions wind up with a record of 11-3-1. Both Finlandia soccer teams will host the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament next weekend. We’ll broadcast their games on 99.3 The Lift.

At the Sisu Classic yesterday, the Finlandia University volleyball team lost to Grace Christian University 3-1, and then defeated Rockford University 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 27-25). Grace Christian will face Rockford this morning at 9:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center, and Finlandia will meet Grace Christian again at 11:00. Pregame coverage of that match will start at 10:40 on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com.

The Finlandia football team plays at Adrian College today.

Both Finlandia hockey teams begin their seasons today. The women face St. Catherine in Marshfield, Wisconsin. The men play at Wisconsin-River Falls.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech soccer team scored three goals in the first half, and defeated Northern Michigan University 3-1 yesterday. Grace Shaw, Marisa DeMario and Leah Goldman found the net for the Huskies. Tech finishes the regular season at 10-5-1 overall, and 5-4-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Huskies are seeded fourth in the GLIAC tournament, and will host fifth-seeded Ashland in the opening round on Tuesday.

The MTU volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 27-25, 25-17) victory over NMU last night. Mariah Sherman led the Huskies with 21 kills. The win guarantees that Tech will host its opening game in the upcoming GLIAC tournament.

The Tech football team plays at Northern Michigan today at 1:00.

The Huskies hockey team blasted 14th-ranked University of Wisconsin 6-2 last night. Alec Broetzman scored twice, and Trenton Bliss, Tommy Parrottino, Gavin Gould and Jake Jackson had a goal apiece. Five of Tech’s scores came on power plays. Matt Jurusik stopped 25 shots. Those teams play again tonight in Madison.

The NMU hockey team blanked Bemidji State 3-0 last night. The Wildcats host the Beavers again tonight.

MLB
The Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in game three of the World Series last night. Boston still leads the Fall Classic two wins to one. Game four will be played tonight in L-A.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons entertain the Boston Celtics tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Pistons will play without Luke Kennard for at least two weeks. He suffered a separated shoulder during Thursday’s win over Cleveland.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 last night. Andreas Athansiou’s first-period goal gave Detroit an early lead, but the Jets peppered Jimmy Howard with 40 shots, tied the game in the second period, and scored the game-winner in the third. The Wings host the Dallas Stars tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 4:40 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
The Detroit Lions entertain the Seattle Seahawks in a 1:00 game tomorrow. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers visit the Los Angeles Rams in a 4:25 game.
