Calumet, LL-H Honor Top Senior Athletes – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton defeated Kingsford 6-2. Kade Farrell was the winning pitcher.

Lake Linden-Hubbell High School has named its top senior athletes. Melissa Wagner was selected as the top female, and Caleb Klein as the top male.

Klein was a member of the football, hockey, track and baseball teams, and earned 12 varsity letters. In football, Klein earned All Conference Running Back honors in 2019 and All UP honors in 2020. In track, he was named the 2019 Copper Mountain Conference sprinter of the year and was All State and MHSAA champion in the 400m and 800m relays. He was also All State in the 100m dash, helping his team finish second at the UP track finals. Klein is the Valedictorian of the Class of 2021 and plans to attend Michigan Tech University to major in Biomedical Engineering. Caleb is the son of Jeff and Melissa Klein.

Melissa Wagner

Wagner participated in volleyball, basketball, track, and softball, earning nine varsity letters. Wagner was named to the All-Copper Mountain Conference volleyball second team in 2019, and first team in 2020. She was All-State and MHSAA champion in the 4x400m relay, helping her team win its third consecutive UP track title in 2019. Wagner is enrolling in the Army reserves. She is the daughter of Rebecca and Nicholas Wagner.

Calumet High School has also selected its top seniors. The Holly Jean McCullah Award was presented to Elli Djerf, and the George Gipp All-American Award was presented to Dean Loukus.

Loukus earned nine varsity letters in football, hockey and baseball. He was named Michigan’s “Mr. Hockey” for 2021, after making the All-State Dream Team, and being named the Great Lakes Hockey Conference Player of the Year. He was an All-State first team honoree in 2020. Loukus holds a number of Copper Kings hockey records, including career points, season and career assists, and assists in a game.

Djerf collected 10 varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and softball. She was the WestPAC Basketball Player of the Year in 2021, and was named to the All-U.P. Dream Team and the A.P. All-State first team. She holds Copper Kings records for career field goals, three-pointers in a game, three-pointers in a season, and three-pointers in a career. She is second on the all-time Calumet scoring list. Djerf was named WestPAC Volleyball Player of the Year for 2019 and 2020. She also holds five school softball records, and is graduating with a 4.0 grade point average.

• The Bucks smothered the Heat 113-84. Milwaukee leads that series 3-0.
• The Lakers outscored the Suns 109-95. L-A leads that set 2-1.
• The Nuggets got past the Trail Blazers 120-115. Denver leads that series 2-1.

Tonight…
• The Hawks host the Knicks. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Celtics entertain the Nets. Brooklyn leads that series 2-0.
• The Mavericks welcome the Clippers. Dallas leads that set 2-0.

NHL

In the NHL playoffs last evening…
• The Canadiens shaded the Maple Leafs 4-3 in overtime. Toronto leads that series 3-2.
• The Hurricanes edged the Predators 4-3 in overtime. Carolina wins that series 4-2.

Tonight…
• The Golden Knights host the Wild. That series is tied 3-3.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 5-2 yesterday. Matthew Boyd gave up a run in the first inning, then left as Cleveland scored three in the sixth. He took the loss. Indians starter Shane Bieber struck out 12 Detroit batters over seven innings. The only hit he gave up was a solo home run by Jonathan Schoop in the seventh. The Tigers’ other run came in the ninth, when Victor Reyes tripled home Eric Haase.

The Tigers host the New York Yankees tonight. Casey Mize will start against Gerrit Cole. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jackie Bradley Jr.’s single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres last evening. Willy Adames homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers visit the Washington Nationals this evening. Brett Anderson will pitch against Jon Lester.
