Tigers Pound Royals to Increase AL Central Lead
The Tigers opened their critical series with the Royals with a resounding 10-1 victory last night. Detroit scored three in the first inning, added one in the second, and chased KC starter Jason Vargas when Ian Kinsler doubled in a run in the fourth. They put the game away with five runs in the fifth inning, which was capped by a two-run Kinsler homer. Justin Verlander gave up seven hits before leaving with a runner on base in the eighth inning. Reliever Evan Reed Allowed that runner to score.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City this afternoon. Max Scherzer will start against James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 1:05 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.

The victory increases Detroit’s lead over Kansas City to a game-and-a-half in the American League Central Division. The Tigers have nine games remaining in the regular season.

Anibal Sanchez is scheduled to throw a simulated game tomorrow morning, as he works his way back from a chest muscle injury. If that goes well, Sanchez could be reactivated sometime next week. Catcher Alex Avila continues to suffer dizziness, in what both he and the team now acknowledge is an aftereffect from a concussion. It’s not known when he may be able to play again.

Brewers Fall to Bucs
The Brewers’ post-season chances suffered another huge blow last night, as Milwaukee fell to the Pirates 4-2. The Brewers took a first-inning lead, then added a run on Rickie Weeks’ solo homer in the fifth. Yovani Gallardo pitched shutout ball through seven innings. Jonathan Broxton relieved him to start the eighth, and gave up a three-run homer to Russell Martin. Pittsburgh scored an insurance run off Jeremy Jeffress later in the inning, and held on for the win.

The Brewers continue that series at Pittsburgh tonight. Matt Garza will pitch against Edinson Volquez.

Saint Louis won, so Milwaukee is now seven games out of first place in the National League Central Division. Any combination of two Brewers’ wins or Cardinals losses eliminates Milwaukee from title contention. The Pirates now hold a four-and-a-half game advantage over the Brewers in the race for the second wild card playoff position.
