In high school football last night…
– Brent Loukus’ 36-yard touchdown run with 6:48 remaining in the game lifted Calumet to a 14-6 victory over Northland Pines. The Copper Kings took an early lead on a nine-yard Loukus to Matt Ojala pass. The Eagles tied the game 6-6 when quarterback Ryan Peterson broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run in the third period. Neither of the ensuing extra point attempts was successful. Ojala ran the ball across for a two-point conversion after the final score. The Copper Kings play at Negaunee Thursday night.
– The new L’Anse-Baraga co-op team smothered an undermanned Houghton squad 27-0. The Gremlins suited up just 15 players for the game, and never threatened offensively. Kooper Jahfetson threw two touchdown passes for the Purple Hornets. Houghton entertains Westwood Thursday night. L’Anse will host Lake Linden-Hubbell on Thursday. Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team hung tough through two of three scheduled 30-minute periods in its exhibition match against Northern Michigan University on Saturday. The Wildcats led just 1-0, before using their superior firepower and numbers to break through in the third period, and take a 7-0 victory. Both the Lions men’s and women’s teams open their regular seasons Friday on the road at Northland College. Listen for selected Finlandia University athletics broadcasts this season on 99.3 The Lift.

Yolmer Sánchez’ RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in the winning run, as the Chicago White Sox edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 last night. Justin Verlander turned in another strong start, allowing two runs over seven innings, and striking out eight. Joe Jimenez took the loss. José Iglesias drove in both Detroit runs with a single in the fifth inning.
The Tigers will continue that series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. With Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list, Buck Farmer has been brought up from Toledo to start against Carlos Rodón. Pregame coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
To make room for Farmer on the roster, JaCoby Jones has been sent down to the Mud Hens.
Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera has been suspended for seven games for shoving New York Yankees catcher Austin Romine during Thursday’s game. Cabrera’s push set off a series of brawls. Detroit pitcher Alex Wilson was suspended for four games, and manager Brad Ausmus will sit out one. For the Yankees, Romine was suspended for two games, and Gary Sanchez for four games. Several other players received fines,, but were not suspended. All of the suspensions are being appealed, and the affected players can continue to play during the appeals process.
Domingo Santana’s solo home run was Milwaukee’s only hit, as the Brewers lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 last night. Chase Anderson gave up two runs over five innings, and took the loss. The Brewers continue that set in Los Angeles tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Ross Stripling.
NFL
In NFL preseason action, the New England Patriots scored 24 points in the first quarter, but had to come from behind to defeat the Detroit Lions 30-28 last night. Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes to begin the Lions’ comeback. Jake Rudock added a scoring pass late in the third quarter, and Detroit took the lead when Dwayne Washington plunged in from a yard out midway through the fourth quarter. The Patriots bounced back with two late field goals to take the victory.
Lions’ linebacker Tahir Whitehead left last night’s game with a knee injury. He’ll be evaluated today.
The Green Bay Packers play at Denver tonight.
