Calumet, Jeffers in Volleyball Regional Semis Tonight – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball regional semifinal action tonight…
– In Division Three, Calumet faces Manistique at 6:00 at Escanaba. The winner will meet either Indian River Inland Lakes or Traverse City Saint Francis for the regional crown Thursday.
– In Division Four, Jeffers takes on Wakefield-Marenisco at 7:30 at Westwood. The winner will play either Carney-Nadeau or Mid-Peninsula for the title.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team entertains Lakeland University tonight at 6:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. Our broadcast begins at 5:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Anaheim Ducks tonight. Coverage begins at 9:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings will be without Justin Abdelkader for at least the next three weeks. He’s been shelved with what’s described as a “mid-body injury.” Givani Smith has been brought up from Grand Rapids to fill in.

Longtime hockey commentor Don Cherry has been fired from “Hockey Night in Canada.” During a broadcast on Saturday, Cherry accused Canadian immigrants of not showing respect for Canadian military veterans. It’s not the first time the 85-year-old has disparaged those not born in Canada, including European hockey players. His broadcast partner, Ron MacLean, has apologized for the comments. Cherry has not.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 120-114 to the Minnesota Timberwolves last night. Luke Kennard led Detroit with 25 points. Blake Griffin made his season debut, scoring 19 points in 24 minutes. Derrick Rose also returned, after missing four games with a sore hamstring. The Pistons visit the Miami Heat tonight.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, Jason Myers’ field goal in overtime gave the Seattle Seahawks a 27-24 victory over the previously unbeaten San Francisco 49ers.

Former Michigan State University receiver Charles Rogers has died at age 38. Rogers was an All-American for the Spartans, and was chosen by the Detroit Lions with the second pick in the 2003 NFL Draft. His career stalled immediately because of injuries, legal and drug issues, and he played in just 15 professional games. No cause of death has been released.
