Calumet, Jeffers Claim Volleyball Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet breezed past Houghton 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-12). Molly Larson had 18 kills and six aces.
– Hancock fell to Gwinn 3-0.
– Baraga v Watersmeet – no report.
– Jeffers earned a hard-fought 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 28-26, 25-20) victory over Ewen-Trout Creek.
– Chassell v West Iron County – no report.
– Ontonagon v Bessemer – no report.

In volleyball tonight, Baraga plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

The Mont Ripley Racing Team will hold its fall ski swap Saturday at Mont Ripley. There will be new and used Alpine, Nordic and snowboard equipment, clothing and accessories. If you have equipment you would like to sell, bring it to Mont Ripley Friday afternoon between 4:30 and 7:30, or Saturday morning between 8:30 and 10:00. Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team plays at Bethel University in Saint Paul this evening.

Harlie Caster of the Lions has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for volleyball. Caster had a career-high 20 digs in FinnU’s recent loss to Mount Mary.

Goaltender Sam Linteo has been named the ACAA Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. Linteo has gone 224 minutes without giving up a goal.

The Finlandia softball team will face Bay College in a special doubleheader Sunday at McAfee Field. The event will raise money to help Hancock City Manager Barry Givens with medical expenses. Givens is fighting kidney cancer, and has been on medical leave. Admission will be by donation. Along with the games, there will be raffles and a chuck a ball fundraiser. The softball benefit begins at noon.

NHL

The Anaheim Ducks scored three goals in the third period, and handed the Detroit Red Wings their first loss of the season last night, 3-1. Filip Hronek scored Detroit’s goal in the second period. Jimmy Howard made 26 saves.

The Wings skate at Montreal on Thursday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Dallas Mavericks for a preseason contest tonight. Listen for select Pistons regular-season games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In the American League divisional series, the Tampa Bay Rays beat Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros 4-1 last night. That series is tied 2-2, and will be decided in Houston tomorrow.

Both National League divisional series are tied 2-2, and will end today. The Cardinals visit the Braves, and the Dodgers host the Nationals.
