Calumet Over Houghton in Volleyball Showdown – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet defeated Houghton 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 15-11). Lea Bjorn led the Copper Kings with 28 kills. Brea Johnson had 27 assists. Niina Anderson contributed 26 assists and four aces, and Amber Johnson had 39 digs.
– Baraga v Watersmeet – not reported.
– Chassell v West Iron County – not reported.
– Ontonagon v Bessemer – not reported.

At the Westwood Fox and Hounds Invitational cross country meet yesterday, the Houghton boys swept the top five positions to earn a perfect score. Clayton Sayen finished first, and Seth Helman second. Additional results were not reported.

MLB
The New York Yankees advanced to the American League playoffs last night, with an 8-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the Wild Card play-in game. The American League Divisional series both begin tomorrow, with the Yankees facing the Cleveland Indians, and the Boston Red Sox taking on Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros.

The Colorado Rockies will meet J.D. Martinez and the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Wild Card play-in game tonight.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ entire coaching staff will remain in place next season. General Manager David Stearns made the announcement yesterday. He also said that pitcher Jimmy Nelson won’t be recovered from his recent shoulder surgery in time for the start of the 2018 season.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons open their NBA exhibition season tonight against the Charlotte Hornets at their new downtown Detroit arena. We’ll broadcast selected Pistons games this season on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings open the regular season tomorrow night at home against the Minnesota Wild. Hear the game on 99.3 The Lift. The Wings will open the season without forward Andreas Athanasiou, who has not agreed to a contract. Athanasiou is reportedly considering an offer to play for the KHL in Russia, although their season is already underway.
