In the high school hockey tournament regional semifinals last night…
– Houghton spotted Hancock an early lead, then rolled to an 8-1 victory. After Colton Salani found the net for the Bulldogs, the Gremlins got two goals from Brendan Norkol to take the lead. Tucker Tapani also scored twice, and Sully Rajala, Ty Halonen, Niko Rajala and Trent Ledgerwood each scored once.
– Calumet blanked Jeffers 8-0 in a two-period, mercy-rule contest. Peter Larson and Scott Loukus each scored twice. and the Copper Kings also got goals from Dean Loukus, Jackson Rilei, Gabe Coppo and Tanner Rowe.

In girls high school basketball last night…
– Hancock steamrolled Ontonagon 57-24. D’Andra Kero scored 12 for the Bulldogs.
– Ewen-Trout Creek shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 60-15.
– L’Anse outscored Jeffers 66-50. Maija Rice led the Purple Hornets with 17 points, and Addison Mattson added 14. Dayna Johnson and Melissa Nordstrom each scored 11 for the Jets.
– Baraga smothered Republic-Michigamme 80-17.
On the boys schedule last night…
– Houghton lost to Iron Mountain 91-63.
– Calumet defeated L’Anse 70-54.
The girls regular season concludes tonight, as Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Calumet. That game will be part of a triple-header. The boys JV contest will start at 4:30; the girls varsity at 5:45; and the boys varsity at 7:15.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association
The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University hockey teams conclude their regular seasons with a home-and-home series this weekend. Faceoffs are at 7:00 tonight in Marquette, and 6:07 tomorrow at the SDC.
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team spotted Northern Michigan an early lead last night, then came back to claim a 51-48 victory. After falling behind by 10 late in the first quarter, the Huskies outscored the Wildcats 20-6 in the second quarter, then held on down the stretch. Ellie Mackay and Cassidy Trotter each scored 14 for Tech.
The Huskies will be seeded seventh in the GLIAC tournament, and will open at second-seeded Grand Valley State on Tuesday. Fifth-seeded Northern Michigan will open at fourth-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Tech men’s team overpowered Northern 91-61. Kyle Monroe scored 32.
The Huskies earned the third seed in the GLIAC tournament, and will host sixth-seeded Saginaw Valley State in the opening round Tuesday. Eighth-seeded Northern Michigan will visit top-seeded Ferris State.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team opens play in the ACAA tournament tomorrow in Milwaukee. The second-seeded Lions will face third-seeded Pine Manor. The pregame show will begin around 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com. Top seed UC Santa Cruz will face host Mount Mary in the other semifinal. If the Lions advance to the championship game on Sunday, we will broadcast it at 11:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jimmy Howard’s struggles continued, as the Detroit Red Wings lost 7-1 to the Minnesota Wild last evening. Howard gave up five goals before he was replaced by Jonathan Bernier midway through the game. He suffered his 20th straight loss in net.
The Wings visit the Ottawa Senators tomorrow. Because of Finlandia basketball coverage on 99.3 The Lift, the Wings’ pregame show will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

The Detroit Pistons visit the Phoenix Suns tonight. Coverage begins at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
In spring baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost 6-3 to half of the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday. Jordan Zimmermann pitched into the third inning, but gave up four runs on five hits.Catching hopeful Eric Haase hit a home run, and Harold Castro had two hits.
The Tigers face the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon.
The Milwaukee Brewers outscored the Kansas City Royals 4-2 yesterday. Orlando Arcia homered. Brett Anderson started, and tossed two shutout innings.
The Brewers play the Los Angeles Dodgers today.
CopperDog 150
The CopperDog 150 begins tonight. All three of last year’s champions are back to defend their titles – Martha Schouweiler in the three-stage 150, Jerry Trudell in the two-stage 80, and Geri Minard in the single-stage 25. The opening ceremony for all three races begins at 6:30 in downtown Calumet, and the first musher leaves the starting gate at 7:00. The 25 will end this evening in Gay. Both the 150 and the 80 will conclude early Sunday afternoon in downtown Calumet. Listen for our coverage all weekend on KBear 102.3 and 97.7 The Wolf.
