Calumet, Houghton Take Easy Hockey Wins – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Tanner Rowe scored twice as Calumet outskated Kingsford 6-1. Gabe Coppo, Rylan Anderson, Nolan Jenich and Brent Loukus also found the net for the Copper Kings. Alex Studebaker stopped 13 shots to earn the win in net.
– Brendan Erickson had two goals and three assists as Houghton routed Negaunee 8-0. Ty Halonen also scored twice, and Brad Gauthier, Dane Johnson, Tucker Tapani and Niko Rajala had one goal each. The Miners were only able to launch two shots at Gremlins goalie Matthew Ryynanen.

On today’s hockey schedule…
– Jeffers faces the FNV Griffins from the Saginaw area at the Gaylord DIII Challenge this morning at 10:00.
– Calumet hosts Utica Eisenhower tonight.

In hockey tomorrow…
– Houghton welcomes Utica Eisenhower at 1:00.
– Jeffers faces Grand Rapids Catholic Central at the Gaylord DIII Challenge at 2:00.

In boys basketball last evening…
– Houghton stopped Hancock 59-37.
– Calumet shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 69-35. Matt Ojala had 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Ontonagon 56-55. Ashton Janke hot two late free throws to win the game for the Blue Bolts.
– Chassell outscored Jeffers 62-43.
– L’Anse fell at West Iron County 59-52 in overtime.

In girls action last night…
– Calumet lost to Ishpeming 42-38. Elli Djerf led the Copper Kings with 17 points.

On the girls schedule tonight…
– Houghton plays at West Iron County.
– Hancock welcomes Negaunee.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell tips off at Chassell
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City entertains Ontonagon.
– Baraga visits L’Anse.

In high school swimming, Houghton and Sault Sainte Marie compete at a triangular at Marquette today.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team welcomes Wisconsin-Stout tonight. Our broadcast coverage will begin at 4:40 ahead of a 5:00 tip-off on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team is downstate at the Hope College Post-Exam Jam. They’ll face the host team tonight, and either Baldwin-Wallace University or Thomas More University tomorrow.

The Lions men’s hockey team welcomes Wisconsin-Stout tonight at 7:15. Those teams will face off again tomorrow night in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

The Finlandia women’s hockey squad skates at Concordia Moorhead tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team visits Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team entertains Ferris State University tonight and tomorrow night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will host Lewis University tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. The Huskies men’s team welcomes Wisconsin-Stout tomorrow at 4:00.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines will face the Mosinee Papermakers tonight. That game will begin at 7:30 at Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse. Those teams will play again tomorrow night at the Colosseum.

Alumni from the Portage Lake Pioneers will face off in an exhibition match today at 6:15 at Dee Stadium. The public is invited. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Ottawa Senators tonight. We’ll join the game in progress after Finlandia basketball on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Boston Celtics tomorrow night.

NFL
In last night’s NFL contest, the Los Angeles Chargers scored a touchdown and added a two-point conversion with eight seconds remaining, to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 29-28.

We’ll broadcast a special NFL doubleheader tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. The Houston Texans visit the New York Jets at 4:30, and the Denver Broncos host the Cleveland Browns at 8:20.

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers visit the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 game. The Detroit Lions travel to Buffalo to face the Bills in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired reliever Alex Claudio from the Texas Rangers in exchange for the 40th pick in next spring’s amateur draft.

In yesterday’s Rule Five draft, the Detroit Tigers selected Rangers reliever Reed Garrett. Garrett earned 21 saves in Double-A and Triple-A ball last season. The Tigers will need to keep Garrett on their roster for the entire 2019 season, or offer him back to Texas.

Our high school basketball coverage continues Monday, when the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys play at Chassell. The pregame show will begin around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
