High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet defeated U of D Jesuit 3-1 to retain the Miner’s Helmet. First period goals by Dean Loukus and Alex Mattila gave the Copper Kings a strong start. Loukus scored his second goal of the evening in the second period. The Cubs finally got one past Alex Studebaker midway through the third period. Studebaker stopped 23 shots to earn the win.
– Houghton fell to Brighton 3-2. Tucker Tapani scored early for the Gremlins, as the teams finished the first period tied 1-1. After a scoreless second frame, the Bulldogs forged ahead with two goals in the third period. Brandon Trudeau’s goal with 10 seconds remaining closed the gap for the Gremlins. Jimmy Pietila made 24 saves.
– Jeffers lost to Escanaba 7-2. The Eskymos scored five times in the first 11 minutes to take control early. Keegan Rajala and Kyler Hillstrom scored for the Jets.
In high school hockey today…

– Houghton welcomes U of D Jesuit at 1:00.
– Jeffers entertains the Northwest Icemen from Barron High School at 2:00.
In girls high school basketball last night…
– Hancock fell to Westwood 59-34. D’Andra Kero scored 20 for the Bulldogs.
– Baraga overwhelmed Lake Linden-Hubbell 55-13.
– L’Anse got past Ontonagon 49-42. Maija Rice led the Purple Hornets with 16 points. Alayna Waara added 11. Ella Menigoz scored 19 for the Gladiators.
In boys action last night, Ontonagon lost to Bessemer 51-40.
The Houghton High School swim team hosts the Houghton Splash tournament today.
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams welcome Ashland University this afternoon. The women’s game starts at 1:00, and the men’s contest at 3:00.
Both Northern Michigan University teams host Wayne State today.
Western Collegiate Hockey Association
The Northern Michigan University hockey team defeated Bowling Green 5-2 last night. Those teams skate again tonight in Ohio.
The Michigan Tech hockey team plays non-conference games at Arizona State tonight and tomorrow.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 3-1 at Concordia-Wisconsin last night. Cale Markham scored the Lions’ only goal. Marcus Gloss made 40 saves. Those teams face off again this evening.
The Lions men’s basketball team will entertain Alma College today at 1:00.
The women’s basketball game that was scheduled for today against Great Lakes Christian has been postponed.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Marquette Mutineers 6-5 in overtime last night.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings dropped a 4-1 decision to the Dallas Stars last night. Dylan Larkin gave Detroit a quick lead less than four minutes into the game, but the Stars shut the Wings down after that. Jonathan Bernier stopped 23 shots.
The Wings visit the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow. Because of NFL football, coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Golden State Warriors tonight.
There are multiple reports that the Pistons are exploring a potential trade of Andre Drummond. Drummond could become a free agent at the end of the season, or could choose to play one more year in Detroit for $28.8 million. The Pistons would likely look to trade for a combination of draft picks and veterans with contracts that expire at the end of this season, to open salary cap space.

The NFL playoffs open today…
– Buffalo plays at Houston at 4:35.
– Tennessee visits New England at 8:15.

– Minnesota kicks off at New Orleans at 1:05.
– Seattle plays at Philadelphia at 4:40.

Nordic Skiing
In the freestyle individual competition at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships on the Tech Trails yesterday…
– Kyle Bratrud from SMS T2 won the men’s 15k, 13 seconds ahead of Gus Schumacher of the Alaska Winter Stars.
– 41-year-old Riita-Liisa Roponen of Finland took the women’s 10k, 18 seconds better than Caitlin Patterson of the U.S. Ski Team.
