Calumet Hockey Routs Hancock – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last evening, Calumet outskated Hancock 7-1. Sam Erkkila and Tanner Rowe each scored twice and had two assists for the Copper Kings. Scott Loukus, Dean Loukus and Hunter Rowe also scored. Hunter Saarinen had Hancock’s only goal. Alex Studebaker faced only nine shots in net for the Kings.

In girls basketball last night, the Hancock game against Lake Linden-Hubbell was postponed to February 5th.

In boys action last night…
– L’Anse shut down Baraga 69-18.
– The Houghton game against Ishpeming was postponed. No make-up date has been announced.
– The Jeffers contest against Republic-Michigamme was postponed to February 6th.
– The Chassell game against Wakefield-Marenisco was delayed to February 11th.
– The Ontonagon contest against Ewen-Trout Creek was snowed out.

In high school swimming yesterday, The meet between Houghton and Ishpeming was canceled, and will not be rescheduled.

Finlandia
Tonight’s Finlandia University women’s basketball against Northland College at the Paavo Nurmi Center has been canceled because of the weather. It will not be made up.

Finlandia’s Austin Carlson has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Carlson earned three double-doubles in the Lions’ three losses last weekend.

MTU
Michigan Tech goaltender Matt Jurusik has been named the NCAA’s First Star for the week. Jurusik stopped all 39 shots he faced, while turning in two shutouts at Alaska Anchorage last weekend.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons’ struggles continued last night with a 115-105 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 25 points. The Pistons host the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return from the NHL All-Star break Friday, when they entertain the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pregame coverage will start at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Detroit Lions continue to make coaching changes. Quarterback coach George Godsey is leaving for a job with the Miami Dolphins. He’ll be replaced by Sean Ryan, who’s been the quarterback coach for the Houston Texans. Running backs coach David Walker is also leaving the team, to pursue other interests. No replacement has yet been announced.

Snowmobile
The Whealkate Bluff Snowmobile Hill Climb will be held at Saturday at Whealkate Bluff in South Range. Activities begin at 9:00. For details, including the schedule and sign-up information, click here.

Our high school hockey coverage continues this weekend from the Trenton Showcase downstate. On Friday, Hancock faces Grand Rapids Christian. Pregame coverage will begin around 11:50. Calumet takes on Livonia Stevenson Pregame coverage will start around 4:00. On Saturday morning, Houghton will play Warren De La Salle. Pregame coverage will begin around 8:20.

The New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams will meet in the Super Bowl Sunday at 6:30. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
