In hockey last night…
• Calumet opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Marquette. The game was scoreless through two periods. Ayden Williams scored the first goal off a Dean Loukus assist. Loukus added another a few minutes later, and the Kings held on for the win.
• Houghton blanked Jeffers 8-0.
In girls basketball last evening…
• Calumet outscored Negaunee 62-54. Elli Djerf scored 27 for the Copper Kings.
• Hancock smothered Gwinn 42-18.
• L’Anse grounded Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 86-47.
• Ewen-Trout Creek routed Lake Linden-Hubbell 83-21.
• Jeffers shut down Bessemer 53-19.
• The Baraga game against Wakefield-Marenisco was postponed. No make-up date has been announced.
In boys basketball last night…
• Escanaba overpowered Houghton 63-22.
• Chassell downed Calumet 61-45.
• Gwinn outscored Hancock 46-35.
• Jeffers stopped Bessemer 63-43.
• Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 88-56. Jaden Borseth and Kelsey Jilek each scored 16 for the Panthers. Marcus Sutherland had 20 for the Lakes.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City overwhelmed L’Anse 81-35.
Both Houghton High School swim teams fell to Marquette last evening – the girls 117-59, and the boys 118-62. Individual winners for the Gremlins included Archer Olson in the 500 freestyle, and Quinn Aho in diving. See full results here.

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team edged Ferris State University 2-1 last evening. Justin Misiak scored early for the Huskies. Blais Richartz netted the game winner midway through the third period – his first as a Husky. Brian Halonen assisted on both goals. Blake Pietila made 29 saves in net, and fell just nine seconds short of a shutout, after the Bulldogs pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.
Those teams will face off again Friday and Saturday in Houghton, in the delayed Winter Carnival series.
College Basketball
Last night’s Finlandia University women’s basketball game at Wisconsin-Superior was postponed because of COVID-19 protocols. Tonight’s game at Bay College is still scheduled to be played.
Tonight’s men’s hoops contest at Wisconsin-Superior has been postponed, as has their game at Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday – both because of COVID-19 protocols. The Lions are still scheduled to play at Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday, and have added a game at Coe College on Sunday.
College Volleyball
Michigan Tech has been picked to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division volleyball title. The coaches’ poll released yesterday placed Northern Michigan University third, and Lake Superior State sixth in the North. Ashland was projected to win the South Division.
College Soccer
Cora Essenmacher has been named the assistant soccer coach at Michigan Tech. She has been a graduate assistant coach for women’s basketball since the fall of 2019.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Florida Panthers 2-1 last evening. Filip Zadina scored three-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Thomas Griess made 20 saves, and took the tough loss.
The Wings skate at Nashville tomorrow. Because of Finlandia hockey, coverage begins at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
In their first game without Derrick Rose, the Detroit Pistons defeated the Brooklyn Nets 122-111 last night. Jerami Grant matched his career high with 32 points. Delon Wright added 22 points and nine assists. Mason Plumlee collected 12 rebounds.
The Pistons host the Indiana Pacers tomorrow.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have signed former Detroit Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann to a minor league contract. Zimmermann struggled during his five years in Detroit, but says he has recovered from a series of injuries, and believes he can still compete.
The Tigers have signed infielder Greg Garcia to a minor league contract. He played the last couple of seasons for the San Diego Padres.
Our Finlandia University hockey coverage continues tomorrow, when the Lions entertain Concordia-Wisconsin. The pregame show will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
