Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ortiz was the only player elected to the hall by voters from the Baseball Writers Association, and he achieved the honor in his first year of eligibility. Voters again turned away Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds, who all had hall-worthy careers, but whose legacies have been tainted by allegations or admissions of steroid use. It was the final year on the ballot for all three. They could eventually be added by the hall’s era committee, which this year selected Buck O’Neil, Minnie Miñoso, Gil Hodges, Tony Oliva, Jim Kaat and Bud Fowler.
