Calumet Hockey Claims First Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet earned its first win of the season last night, holding off Escanaba 4-3. Brendan Boberg and Erik Loukus scored for the Copper Kings, as the first period ended in a 2-2 tie. Luca Matous and Ben Anderson found the net in the second period. The Eskymoes closed the gap in the third, but the Kings held on for the victory. Hunter Tuoriniemi made 30 saves.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 7-2 in the opener of their home-and-home weekend series last night at the Colosseum. Those teams meet again tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL

The Red Wings broke their four-game losing streak with a wild 7-6 shootout win over the Flyers last night. Detroit took a 5-1 lead in the first period. Philadelphia rallied to take a 6-5 lead, but Dylan Larkin’s goal with four-and-a-half minutes remaining forced overtime. After a scoreless extra period, Lucas Raymond and Patrick Kane scored in the shootout. Kane also had two goals and an assist in regulation. James Reimer made 37 saves.

The Wings are off until Wednesday, when they visit the Wild. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons will try to break their 25-game losing streak when they visit the Nets this evening.

NFL

On the NFL schedule today…
• The Bengals visit the Steelers for a 4:30 contest.
• The Chargers host the Bills in an 8:00 tilt.

MLB

The Tigers have added another veteran pitcher to their roster. Shelby Miller compiled a 1.71 ERA in 42 innings with the Dodgers last year, after several seasons in which he struggled with injuries. He’ll make $3 million in 2024, and the Tigers have a club option for $4.25 million in 2025. Incentives could bring the total to $11 million.
