Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame Members Announced

Calumet Copper Kings LogoCalumet High School has announced this year’s new members of its Athletic Hall of Fame.

Tim Baroni was an All-Conference quarterback and basketball player, and set numerous school track and field records in the mid-1970s. He went on to play basketball at Michigan Tech.

Al Eckhart was a football and basketball standout in the mid-1960s, and set several school track and field records. He went on to letter in track and field at Michigan Tech.

Greg Eckhart earned All-Conference honors in football and basketball in the late 1960s, and set several school track and field records. He went on to earn four varsity football letters at Michigan Tech.

Tim Frantti was an All-Conference football quarterback and hockey player and track standout in the late ’70s and early ’80s. He earned a tryout with the Detroit Lions after a standout career at Northern Michigan University. He has been a leader of the Calumet Hockey Association for 25 years.

Kristen (Hager) Peterson was an All-Conference basketball player and standout track and field competitor in the mid-1980s. She earned four basketball letters at Michigan Tech, and also won the Scholastic Achievement Award as the player with the highest grade point average on the team in each of her four seasons.

Carl “Cookie” Johnson was captain of the unbeaten 1942 Calumet High School football team. He left school during his senior year to serve for four years in the U-S Navy during World War Two, then returned to complete his education at Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. During his 23 years as varsity basketball coach at Baraga High School, his teams won 309 games.

Joseph A. Savini played baseball and hockey at Calumet High School from 1910 to 1914. He continued to play hockey after graduation, reaching the semi-pro level, and then becoming a successful coach. His adult teams won four MacNaughton Cups and two Gibson Cups. He also managed the Calumet Colosseum and the New Amphidrome.

The new Calumet High School Hall of Fame members will be inducted on Saturday, August 27th at 11:00 during a coffee social in the CLK Schools Commons. The public is invited.
