Calumet, Hancock Volleyball Teams Advance – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball regional semifinal play last night…

  • In Division Three, Calumet blanked Manistique 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-5). The first two sets were close until the Copper Kings pulled away late. The third set opened with a 16-point service run by Jackie Kiilunen. Allie Bjorn had 16 kills and 3 aces; Kiilunen 7 kills and 2 aces; Sienna Anderson 7 kills and 2 aces; and Bella Coppo had 24 assists. The Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis in the regional final tomorrow. The site of the game has been changed from St. Ignace to Sault Ste. Marie. The Gladiators swept Inland Lakes 3-0 in their semifinal last evening. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • In Division Four, Hancock swept Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0. Forest Park blanked Munising 3-0. The Bulldogs and Trojans will play for a regional title tomorrow night at 6:00 at Baraga High School.

  • In Division Two, Kingsford fell to Kingsley 3-2. 
  • In Division Four, St. Ignace shaded Rudyard 3-2. The Saints will face Atlanta for a regional crown tomorrow at Pellston High School. The Huskies dispatched Harbor Springs Harbor Light Christian 3-0 last evening.

Multi-sport athlete Emily Jokela from Lake Linden-Hubbell is heading to Grand Valley State to run track. The letter of intent signing will take place in the Lake Linden gym this afternoon at 3:10. As a sprinter, she’s dominated the U.P. Division III 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, and the 300-meter hurdles, including wins in the 100, 400 and hurdles at the U.P. Championships last spring. She was last year’s Copper Mountain Conference Most Valuable Track Athlete. Jokela is also the Lakes’ all-time basketball career scoring leader, and set the single game record when she scored 48 against Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. As a softball pitcher, she tossed a no-hitter against Houghton last May, striking out 15.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team’s season ended with a 5-0 loss to Northern Michigan in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs yesterday. The top-seeded Wildcats will host the semifinals and championship match this weekend. Number-two Grand Valley will play number-three Saginaw Valley State in the first semi at 11:00. NMU will take on Davenport at 2:00.  

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Penguins tonight. Coverage will start at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit goalie Alex Lyon returned to practice yesterday, after missing two games with a lower body injury he suffered last week. He said he felt good, but is not likely to be available for tonight’s game.

NBA

Malik Beasley hit two free throws in the final second of overtime to give the Pistons a 123-121 victory over the Heat last night. Jalen Duren had tied the game with an Alley-Oop dunk with two seconds remaining. Miami then called a time-out they didn’t have, which resulted in a technical foul, and sent Beasley to the line.

The Pistons visit the Bucks this evening.

Detroit’s Tim Hardaway Jr. took two accidental blows to the head on a defensive play during last night’s game. He had to be taken off the court in a wheelchair, and will be evaluated today.

MLB

Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio has been named a finalist for the National League’s Rookie of the Year Award. Pat Murphy is a finalist for Manager of the Year.
