Lions Choose Prater
Former Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater has been signed to kick for the Detroit Lions. Prater becomes the third kicker for the team this season. He can kick – he’s a former Pro Bowler, who missed only one field goal for the Broncos last year, and set a record with a 64-yarder against the Titans. He also has a history of personal problems, and is coming off a four-game suspension for a drunk driving arrest. The Broncos replaced him with Brandon McManus to start the season. Last week, they decided to stick with McManus, and released Prater.

The Detroit Pistons opened the preseason with a 111-109 overtime victory over the Bulls last night. Chicago played the game without Joakim Noah, and pulled Derrick Rose at the end of the first half. We will carry select Pistons games again this season in AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Johnson Assault Trial Extended
The sexual assault trial of former Calumet hockey star Ben Johnson could drag on into the middle of next year. Johnson is accused of making an unwanted physical advance toward a woman in the men’s restroom at a bar in Windsor in January of 2013. The Windsor Star reports that the latest round of testimony in the trial was heard in court last week, when another woman testified that Johnson also approached her at the bar. The judge needs to decide if her story establishes a pattern of behavior that would make it relevant to the case. Attorneys for both sides will argue that point later this month. At that point, the case will be adjourned for eight months… with the next round of testimony tentatively scheduled for June. Johnson’s attorney has accused the alleged victim of trying to use the case to make money. Johnson is under contract to the New Jersey Devils. He was playing for the Windsor Spitfires at the time of the alleged incident. He’s currently assigned to the Albany Devils.
Lake Linden-Hubbell will try to lock up a spot in the high school football playoffs Friday night when they play at Houghton. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
