High School

In high school football Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Norway 34-6. Danny Marcotte led the Lakes’ offense with 52 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

In high school volleyball Saturday…
• Calumet won the Ashwaubenon tournament for the third year in row. The team went undefeated in set play, beating Denmark (25-21, 25-9), North Fond du Lac (25-22, 25-10), Green Bay New Lutheran (25-22) and Antigo (25-14, 25-22). On the day, Allison Bjorn had 25 kills, 11 aces, and 34 digs. Jackie Kiilunen had 17 kills and 21 digs. Maddie Torola totaled 25 kills. Laina Karieniemi had 85 assists, four kills and 8 digs, Caitlyn Strom had 10 kills, six aces and 30 digs, and Izzy Loukus had five aces and13 digs.
• Hancock won the Rock at Gladstone tourney. The Bulldogs defeated Gwinn, Gladstone, Houghton, Carney-Nadeau, Menominee and Westwood in pool play. They dispatched Menominee in the semifinals, and edged Houghton 2-1 (23-25, 25-22, 15-9) in the finals. The Gremlins reached the championship match by defeating Carney-Nadeau in the semifinals. For the Bulldogs, Brooke Koskela earned a spot on the All-Tournament team with 52 kills,8 aces and 51 digs. Lana Aho 20 kills, 14 aces, 43 digs and six blocks, Brielle Kero had 26 kills, three aces and 14 blocks, Ella Storm eight kills, 13 aces and 26 digs, and Emily L’Esperance recorded seven aces, 31 digs and 79 assists. For the Gremlins, Laney Johnson had 117 assists and 32 digs, and was named to the All Tournament Team. Sophia Neves had 41 kills and 13 blocks, Danica Ryynanen had 26 kills and eight blocks, and Brynn Arko had 20 kills, 15 aces, and 27 digs.

College Volleyball

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams concluded play at the Minnesota-Duluth Tournament Saturday…
• The Huskies opened the day by defeating Southern New Hampshire 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-22). Lindy Oujiri led Tech with 13 kills. MTU then fell to 23rd-ranked Central Washington 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-15). Oujiri again led the Huskies with 11 kills.
• The Wildcats fell 3-0 ( 25-21, 25-11, 25-18) to seventh-ranked Minnesota-Duluth.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team overpowered Hillsdale College 45-20 Saturday. The Huskies build a 28-6 halftime lead. Alex Fries completed 18 of 27 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Kolby Hindenach rushed for 72 yards and one score.

The Northern Michigan football team dropped a narrow 24-21 decision to Lake Erie College Saturday. The Storm scored the winning touchdown with 46 seconds remaining.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will visit Lewis University today.

The Northern women’s soccer team plays at Illinois-Springfield today.

The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team lost 2-1 at Thomas More Saturday.

MLB

The Tigers slipped past the White Sox 3-1 Saturday evening. Tarik Skubal gave up just two hits over five scoreless innings. Matt Vierling had two hits, including a home run.

The Tigers host the White Sox again this afternoon. Sawyer Gipson-Long will make his major league debut against Jesse Scholtens. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers bombed the Yankees 9-2 Saturday. Tyrone Taylor homered. Willy Adames scored a “Little League” home run – slashing a triple, and scoring on an error.

The Brewers play in New York again this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start against Gerrit Cole.

The Cubs and Reds both lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division stands at four games over Chicago, and seven-and-a-half games over Cincinnati.

NFL

The Packers begin their campaign this afternoon at Chicago.
