Calumet, Hancock Earn District Volleyball Crowns – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tournament district finals…

  • In Division Three, Calumet cruised past Ironwood 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18). Allie Bjorn had 18 kills, and 12 digs; Jackie Kiilunen 12 kills and 13 digs; Sienna Anderson 5 kills and 3 aces; Chloe Coppo 3 kills and 2 aces; and Bella Coppo 30 assists. The Copper Kings will face Manistique in a regional semifinal game Tuesday at 6:00 at Gwinn High School. The Emeralds won their district with a 3-1 victory over Iron Mountain, and bring a record of 15-11-6 into the match. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Inland Lakes and Traverse City St. Francis will play in the other regional semifinal.
  • In Division Four, District 98, Hancock came from two sets down to defeat Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-13). Cleo Milkey led the Lakes with 18 kills and 14 digs. Emily Burnham had  6 kills and 7 blocks; Ashlyn Steves 33 digs; and Payton Goldsworthy 5 aces and 32 assists. The Bulldogs will face Ewen-Trout Creek in a regional semifinal Tuesday at 6:00 at Houghton High School. Forest Park and Munising will play in the other regional semifinal.

High school football titles are being decided this weekend, with just a handful of U.P. teams still playing…

  • In Division Seven, Menominee hosts Traverse City St. Francis for a district title today.
  • In Division Eight, Iron Mountain entertains East Jordan for a district crown today.
  • In Eight-Player Division One, Ishpeming plays at Pickford for a regional title today.
  • In Eight-Player Division Two, Forest Park claimed a regional crown with a 34-12 victory over North Central last night.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team closes its regular season with a match at 17th-ranked Grand Valley State this afternoon.

Northern Michigan women’s team plays at Saginaw Valley today.

College Hockey

The MTU hockey team spotted Ferris State an early lead, then came back to claim a 3-2 victory last night. Chase Pietila and Marcus Pederson scored power play goals, and Stiven Sardarian’s tally early in the third period was the eventual game-winner. Max Vayrynen stopped 23 shots to earn the win in net. Those teams skate again tonight in Big Rapids.

Lake Superior State took the opening game of the Cappo Cup series last night, with a 5-0 victory over Northern Michigan. That set continues tonight in Marquette.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan basketball teams opened their seasons at the JustAGame Crossover at Wisconsin Dells yesterday. 

  • The Tech women fell to Lewis 68-57, despite a career-best 23 points for Isabella Lenz. The men steamrolled Missouri-St. Louis 72-57, led by Pete Calcaterra’s career-high 23 points.
  • The Northern women’s squad edged Thomas More 48-46 in overtime. Jacy Weisbrod led a balanced attack with 11 points. The men’s team clubbed Maryville 78-59. Brian Parzych scored 15.

On today’s schedule…

  • The Tech women’s team faces Thomas More today at 1:00. The men’s team takes on Maryville at 3:00.
  • The Northern women’s squad plays Lewis this evening at 6:00. The men face Missouri-St. Louis at 8:00.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team dispatched Davenport University 3-1 last night. Meg Raabe had 15 kills. Tess Hayes had 47 assists and 11 digs. The Huskies play at undefeated and top-ranked Ferris State today.

The Northern volleyball squad lost 3-0 to Ferris last night, and visits Davenport today.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team entertains Grand Valley State today at noon.

The Northern Michigan football team plays at Davenport University.

NHL

The Red Wings dropped a 3-1 decision at Toronto last night. Dylan Larkin netted Detroit’s lone goal. Cam Talbot made 17 saves, and took the loss.

The Wings welcome the Rangers tonight. Coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Goalie Alex Lyon has been sidelined by a lower body injury. Ville Husso was called up from Grand Rapids to back up Talbot last night. Coach Derek Lalonde said the injury doesn’t seem to be serious, and Lyon could return as early as Wednesday.

NBA

The Pistons shaded the Hawks 122-121 last evening. Cade Cunningham sank the game-winner with nine seconds remaining, then blocked a last-second Atlanta layup to secure the win. Cunningham finished with 22 points, as did Tobias Harris. Isaiah Stewart grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Rockets tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will start at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jalen Duren missed last night’s game, after spraining an ankle Wednesday against the Hornets. He’s considered day-to-day.

NFL

The Lions visit the Texans for the Sunday night game, with the broadcast at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift. Offensive lineman Taylor Decker will miss the game with a shoulder injury. Newly-acquired defensive end Za’Darius Smith practiced for the first time with the team yesterday, but no decision has been announced as to whether he’ll play tomorrow. 

The Packers have this weekend off.

MLB

To the surprise of no one, Tarik Skubal was the unanimous choice as Tiger of the Year in voting by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Skubal won the pitching Triple Crown by leading the American League in wins, earned run average and strikeouts. He’s the odds-on favorite to win the Cy Young Award.

Youth Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association’s November Gale 10U hockey tournament continues today, with games at Dee Stadium and the HoCo.

  • The local Dollar Bay Linoleum and Tile team outscored Insight Eye Care 5-1.
  • M and M Thunder blasted Crossroads Truck Repair 13-4.
  • Elks downed Great Northern Tile 8-4.
  • The local McDonald’s team lost to Appleton 8-1.
