Calumet Girls Take WestPAC Title – Tuesday Sports Wrap

In girls high school basketball action last night…
Calumet Copper Kings Logo– Calumet remained unbeaten with a narrow 46-42 victory over Houghton. The Copper Kings win the WestPAC title, snapping Houghton’s 16-year championship run.
– Hancock defeated West Iron County 55-32.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Republic-Michigamme 60-16.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City cruised past Watersmeet 59-34.
– Jeffers downed Chassell 47-30.
– Baraga stopped Ewen-Trout Creek 57-30.
– L’Anse lost to Ishpeming 71-37.

In boys action last night, Ontonagon stunned Ewen-Trout Creek 58-54.

On the boys schedule tonight…
– Unbeaten Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Calumet plays at L’Anse.
– Hancock hosts Bessemer.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes Baraga.

In high school hockey last night, Ethan Pattison scored twice in the second period, as L’Anse defeated Negaunee 7-4. Kyle Lake also scored twice for the Purple Hornets. Craig Mantila made 37 saves to get the win. The victory gives L’Anse the third seed in the Lake Superior Conference tournament this weekend at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. They’ll face Kingsford in the first semi-final Friday at six. Top-seeded Jeffers will take on Negaunee at 8:00.

Tonight, Houghton plays at Calumet. Calumet students will be selling chocolate kisses, and will hold a silent jersey auction to raise money for the Keweenaw Health Foundation’s Cancer Fund.

The Michigan Tech hockey team remains at 14th in the nation this week in both the USCHA.com and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the New York Islanders 4-1 yesterday afternoon. Pavel Datsyuk scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard took the loss, stopping 28 of 32 shots in goal.  The Wings skate at Pittsburgh Thursday night. Face-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
