The Detroit Tigers suffered their first loss of the season yesterday, falling 9-3 to the Cleveland Indians. Starter Tarik Skubal gave up a run in the first inning, and was charged with another after Daniel Norris allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth. Cleveland then scored four off Norris in the seventh, and added two off Buck Farmer in the eighth, and another off Tyler Alexander in the ninth. Tigers rookie Akil Badoo blasted the first pitch he saw in his major league debut into the Detroit bullpen. Badoo becomes just the second Detroit player to homer on his first big league pitch. The other was George Vico in 1948. Nomar Mazara also homered for the Tigers.
The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins this afternoon. José Ureña will pitch against Matt Shoemaker. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Twins 8-2 yesterday. Jackie Bradley, Jr., hit his first home run in a Brewers uniform. Adrian Houser gave up two runs over five innings. Minnesota scored four against Drew Rasmussen in the sixth inning, and two more off Josh Lindblom in the eighth.
The Brewers visit the Chicago Cubs tonight. Brett Anderson will start against Trevor Williams.
The 2021 Major League All-Star Game will not be held in Detroit. The Tigers were among several teams that offered their facilities following the league’s decision to move the game out of Atlanta. Reports from the league office indicate that Detroit is not under consideration. MLB announced late last week that it would relocate the game because of restrictive new voting legislation passed by the Georgia legislature. The Michigan legislature is considering adopting similar standards. The Brewers have also offered their facility, noting that it would be a fitting site for a tribute to Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, who passed away earlier this year, and who played most of his career in Milwaukee, first for the Braves, and later for the Brewers. There’s no word as to whether Milwaukee is on the short list.
