Calumet Girls Hoops Downs Baraga – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In girls basketball last evening…
• Calumet opened up a close game with a strong third quarter, and defeated Baraga 51-43. The Vikings led much of the first half, and held a one-point advantage at halftime. The Copper Kings used some inside scoring to take control in the second half. Corina Jahfetson of the Vikings led all scorers with 17 points. Allison Bjorn paced the Copper Kings with 12 points – 10 in the second half. Calumet improves to 7-1 on the season. Baraga drops to 8-2, with their only other loss to Houghton.
• Houghton outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 71-51.
• Hancock shut down Ewen-Trout Creek 48-27. Bella Hebert netted 17 for the Bulldogs, who improve to 9-0. Only two Panthers scored – Emma Besonen had 17, and Kate Borseth 16.
• Ontonagon edged Jeffers 36-33. Raena Kangas led the Jets with 14 points, and Lilly McIntyre scored 12 for the Gladiators.
• L’Anse lost at Ironwood 40-31.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Watersmeet 37-33.

In boys play…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost to Watersmeet 69-45.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton travels to Gwinn. Coverage will begin around 7:00 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet journeys to West Iron County.

In high school hockey last night…
• Houghton remained unbeaten with an 8-0 shutout of Negaunee. Landon Stevens and Sully Rajala each scored twice. Wyatt Jenkins, Gab Carlson, Jay Halonen and Jace DeForce each found the net once. Camden Markham had three assists. The Gremlins outshot the Miners 52-8 in a game that ended midway through the third period because of the mercy rule.
• Hancock edged Kingsford 3-2. Bryce Hanner scored two for the Bulldogs, and Sam Roberts netted one. Calvin Heinonen had two assists. Saku Cunard stopped 22 shots.

In hockey tonight…
• Jeffers hosts Manistique.

Pairings have been announced for the Trenton Showcase. Houghton and Calumet will take part in the annual event February 3rd and 4th. The Copper Kings will face East Grand Rapids that Friday at 12:40, and Trenton Saturday morning at 9:00. Both games will be broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Houghton will play Detroit Catholic Central that Friday at 3:30, and Lake Forest Saturday at 1:20. Both games will be broadcast on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Hancock is not making the trip to Trenton this year.

The Houghton ski team at the Marquette Invitational yesterday – no result.

Both Houghton swim teams earned victories over the Ishpeming-Negaunee team yesterday – the girls 103-82, and the boys 137-39. On the boys side, Johannes Myhre won the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. On the girls side, Rose Dennis claimed the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Claire Filpus won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. See full results here.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball welcomes Finlandia tonight at 6:00 at the SDC.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the 76ers 147-116 last night.

The Pistons host the Timberwolves tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

The Red Wings outscored the Jets 7-5 last evening. Seven different Wings scored. Moritz Seider had four assists. Ville Husso stopped 32 shots.
