In high school hockey last night… Houghton defeated Calumet 5-2. Reid Pietila scored a hat trick for the Gremlins.
In high school boys’ basketball last night…
– Escanaba opened up a 20-point halftime lead, and went on to swamp Houghton 105-69.
– L’Anse got past West Iron County 49-40.
– Ewen-Trout Creek stopped Hurley 54-35.
In girls’ action last night…
– Calumet outlasted a stubborn Hancock squad 43-37. Ellen Twardzik led a balanced Copper Kings attack with 10 points. Maija Sebbas of the Bulldogs led all scorers with 15.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Ontonagon 44-28.
– Jeffers dumped Dollar Bay 52-38.
– Baraga shut down Chassell 43-24.
Finlandia Men’s Hoops Falls
The Finlandia men’s basketball team opened the Madonna University Crusader Classic last night with a 97-56 loss to the host team. Marcus Geralds came off the bench to lead the Lions with 14 points. Brandon Robinson added 12. Finlandia will face Rochester College this afternoon.

MTU Women’s Hoops Ranked
For the first time in more than a year, the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team is in the national rankings. The Huskies are number-20 in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Poll. At 7-0, Tech is one of 16 unbeaten Division II teams remaining in the country.
NMU Adds Three Men’s Hoops Players
The younger brother of a Michigan Tech basketball player will be playing at Northern Michigan University next fall. Vejas Grazulis from Marquette High School announced his decision yesterday. He’s a 6’10” center. His brother, A.J., is a freshman on the Huskies’ squad. Their older sister, Daina, plays basketball at Grand Valley State. The Wildcats also announced commitments from guard Kenton Mack, of Algonquin, Illinois… and Akim Nyang, a 7’1” center who comes from South Sudan via the Mooseheart Academy in Mooseheart, Illinois.
Northern Michigan University women’s basketball coach Troy Mattson has been suspended for four games by the university, after accusing another school of cheating to recruit a star player. Mattson’s comments came after the Wildcats’ recent loss to Wayne State. Center Shareta Brown scored 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in the contest. During the post-game press conference, Mattson was asked why Brown wasn’t voted the GLIAC Pre-Season Player of the Year. Mattson responded that coaches didn’t vote for her, because they know Wayne State cheated to get her. In a statement released yesterday, Mattson apologized. He’ll miss the Wildcats’ game tomorrow night at Lewis, and the games on January 2nd, 4th and 8th.
NHL – Red Wings Fall to Blue Jackets
The Red Wings lost to Columbus 1-0 in a shootout last night. Detroit has lost four in a row… three in shootouts. They have lost five of the six shootouts they’ve been in this season. The Wings host the Islanders Friday night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Host Mavericks
The Pistons host the Mavericks tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
