High School
Calumet won the Division Three girls regional basketball title last night, defeating Saint Ignace 65-55 in overtime. The Copper Kings got off to a slow start, scoring just six points in the first quarter. They found their footing with 22 points in the second quarter, and led by one point at halftime. Calumet led by two late in the fourth quarter, but Tabby Shepard’s short turn-around jumper in the closing seconds of regulation tied the game at 49. The Copper Kings outscored the Saints 16-6 in the extra period. Marybeth Halonen led Calumet with 18 points. Elli Djerf added 17, and Alexis Strom netted seven of her 13 points in OT. Emmalee Hart scored 19 for Saint Ignace, who ended their run of 11 straight regional titles.
The unbeaten Copper Kings will face unbeaten Glen Lake in the quarterfinals Monday at 5:30 at Houghton Lake. The Lakers shut down Hart 58-36 to win their regional title last night. Our coverage will begin at 5:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
Ewen-Trout Creek’s season ended with a 59-41 loss to Carney-Nadeau in the Division Four regional championship match. Elise Besonen scored 22 for the Panthers, who end their fine season with a record of 17-2.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team is ranked 21st in the nation this week in the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association poll. The Huskies will conclude their regular season this weekend against 20th-ranked Northern Michigan.
