High School
Calumet and Houghton will meet in the championship game of the Copper Island Classic, after victories in the opening round Saturday.
The Gremlins advanced with a 6-3 win over Jeffers. After a scoreless first period, the Gremlins took a 3-2 lead late in the second, and outscored the Jets 3-1 in the third. Dawson McKay scored twice for Houghton, and Chad Dunstan, Alan Jurmu, Jacob Kruse and Reid Pietila also found the net. Lance Kangas and Nick Trezona scored for Jeffers.
In the second game, Robert Erkkila’s power play goal with less than three minutes remaining in the third period gave the Copper Kings a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs. Reid Hamar scored for Hancock, and Davin Lehto had Calumet’s other goal. Ian Carroll stopped 32 shots for Calumet, and Dawson Kero made 21 saves for Hancock. The victory also gave the Kings the title for this year’s total goals Copper Island Classic. The two official games of the Classic had ended with the teams tied at six goals each.
Jeffers and Hancock will meet in the consolation match this afternoon at 2:00. The championship game between Calumet and Houghton will follow at around 4:00. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers game against the Calumet Wolverines Saturday night was not reported.

Luke Glendening deflected a shot by Brendan Smith into the goal early in the third period, and lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday. Smith opened the scoring with a goal in the first period, and Riley Sheahan also scored for Detroit. Petr Mrazek made 24 saves. The Wings skate at Minnesota tomorrow night.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Boston Celtics 99-93 Saturday evening. Former Piston Jonas Jerebko hit a key jumper in the closing minute to help Boston secure the win. Detroit center Andre Drummond had 22 points and 22 rebounds for his fifth 20-20 game of the season. The Pistons will face the Knicks in New York Tuesday night.

In last night’s NFL game, Kirk Cousins threw four touchdown passes, as Washington clinched the NFC East title with a 38-24 victory over Philadelphia.
Today, the Detroit Lions entertain the San Francisco 49ers in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The Green Bay Packers visit the Arizona Cardinals for a 4:25 game.
