Calumet Football Remains Unbeaten – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night, the Chassell v Dollar Bay-Tamarack City result was not reported. Today, Houghton, Calumet, Gwinn, West Iron County, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and L’Anse will compete at the WestPAC/MidPen Invitational at Houghton.

In high school football last night…
– Calumet remained unbeaten, with a 34-14 win over Hancock. Travis Ojala ran for two touchdowns, and Brent Loukus completed two touchdown passes to Matt Ojala. Conner LeClaire returned an interception 96 yards for a Bulldogs touchdown.
– Houghton fell to Negaunee 36-16 in the first game on the Gremlins’ new field. The Miners broke open a close game with 22 points in the third quarter. Xander Zapolnik and Nate Erva ran for Houghton touchdowns.
– L’Anse lost at Iron Mountain 31-7.
– Forest Park routed Ontonagon 58-12.

Today, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Bark River-Harris. That game has been moved to McAfee Field. Pregame coverage will start at 1:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team lost 3-1 at Grace Christian University yesterday afternoon. Tyler Dillon scored the Lions’ only goal.

The women’s soccer team will face Rockford University in Milwaukee today.

The Lions volleyball team heads to Plymouth, Wisconsin for a triangular at Lakeland University this afternoon. They’ll face the host Muskies, and Central College from Iowa.

The Finlandia football team will play Hope College in Holland, Michigan, today.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its season with a 2-1 loss to defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth last night. After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs scored one goal against Devin Kero early in the second period, and another midway through the third. Gavin Gould found the net for the Huskies late in the third period, but Tech couldn’t complete the comeback. Those two teams play again tonight. Faceoff is at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Tech volleyball team opened the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament in Indianapolis with 3-1 wins over Truman State University (17-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-17) and Tiffin University (25-16, 25-14, 18-25, 25-23) yesterday. Olivia Ghormley led the attack against the Bulldogs with 18 kills. Mariah Sherman had 19 kills in the game against the Dragons.

The MTU soccer team blanked Purdue Northwest 3-0 last night. Jesse Jacobusse scored the first two Huskies goals, and Grace Shaw added an insurance tally.

The MTU football team hosts Wayne State today at 1:00.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team began its campaign with a 4-2 loss to Michigan State. Those teams play again tonight in East Lansing.

The Wildcats football team plays at Saginaw Valley State this afternoon.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers built an early lead, then held on to edge the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in the opening game of the National League Championship Series last night. Brandon Woodruff became only the third relief pitcher in history to hit a home run in a post-season game. Jesús Aguilar also homered. L-A scored three runs in the eighth, and another in the ninth to make the game close, but Cory Knebel struck out Justin Turner with a runner on third base to seal the win. That series continues this afternoon in Milwaukee. Wade Miley will start against Hyun-Jin Ryu.

The American League Championship Series between the Red Sox and Astros begins tonight in Boston.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will visit the Boston Bruins this afternoon. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons wrapped up their preseason campaign with a 129-110 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. Blake Griffin scored 29 points. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
The Detroit Lions are off this weekend. The Green Bay Packers host the San Francisco 49ers Monday night. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
