Calumet Football Dispatches Gladstone; L’Anse Earns First Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…

  • Negaunee broke out to a quick lead, and cruised past Houghton 31-12. The Gremlins fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, and the Miners scored two plays later. By the end of the first quarter, Negaunee had added two more touchdowns on 30-yard passes to Ian Engstrom, and an 18-yard pass to Baron Heslip. Houghton scored on a 44-yard run by Jay Halonen. Defenses dominated the rest of the game. The Miners fumbled on the second play of the second half, and Houghton capitalized with a 12-yard Halonen touchdown run. Negaunee’s final score came late in the game. The Gremlins fall to 3-5, and wrap up their season at Hancock in the Copper Bowl game next Friday.   • Calumet also got off to a quick start, and stopped Gladstone 19-6. The Braves fumbled the opening kickoff, and the Copper Kings took advantage, scoring on a 24-yard Ben Anderson run. The teams traded possessions with no further scoring in the first half, although Calumet mounted a 10-minute, 13-play drive that ended with a failed fourth down conversion attempt. The Kings took control early in the second half, scoring on their first possession on a 16-yard Anderson run, and on their second with an 18-yard run by quarterback Ted Loukus. Gladstone put together a late scoring drive. The Copper Kings move to 5-3, and could clinch a playoff berth next week at home against L’Anse. Coverage of that contest will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock fell at Westwood 32-8. The Bulldogs drop to 1-7.
  • L’Anse outscored Gwinn 40-22 to claim their first win of the season.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell shaded Ironwood 16-14. Nate St. Onge ran for 130 yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts. Quarterback Brady Axford ran for 84 yards on 18 attempts, and Josh Daavettila rushed seven times for 28 yards and a score. The Lakes improve to 3-5, and will close the season at home next Saturday against Ontonagon.
  • Ontonagon suffered a 63-6 homecoming loss to Forest Park.

On the volleyball schedule today, Calumet hosts a Division 1-2-3-4 quadrangular. Marquette will represent Division One; Kingsford Division Two; the Copper Kings Division Three; and Forest Park Division Four. Contests begin at 10:00 this morning, with two gyms in use. The public is welcome.

The U.P. Cross Country finals will be run today at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

College Football

The MTU football team plays at Ferris State this afternoon.

Northern football hosts Roosevelt University today.

College Hockey

The Northern hockey team edged Alaska 2-1 last night, to earn their first win of the season. Those teams skate in Marquette again tonight.

Tech hockey has the weekend off.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Davenport University yesterday. The Huskies will play at Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.

Justina L’Esperance’s hat trick powered the Northern women’s team to a 4-1 victory at Ferris yesterday. The Wildcats will play at Davenport tomorrow.

The Northern men’s team fell 1-0 to Saginaw Valley State yesterday. The Wildcats will entertain Davenport tomorrow.

College Volleyball

At the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover yesterday….

  • Michigan Tech lost to Quincy 3-0 (19-25, 18-25-18, 21-25), and defeated Tiffin 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18). The Huskies will face Findlay this afternoon.
  • Northern Michigan extended its winning streak to six matches, with a tight 3-2 (16-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 17-15) victory over Findlay, and a 3-1 (25-19. 25-21, 22-25, 25-21) triumph over Indianapolis. The Wildcats will take on Rockhurst this afternoon.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines open their season with an early match against each other tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Predators today. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have called Marco Kasper up from Grand Rapids. He was their first-round draft pick in 2022 (number eight overall).

NBA

The Pistons open the regular season Wednesday at home against the Pacers. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Yankees got past the Guardians 8-6 last night, and took a 3-1 lead in the American League Championship Series. New York could move on to the World Series with a win in Cleveland tonight. 

In the National League Championship Series, the Mets bombed the Dodgers 12-6.  L.A. leads that series 3-2, and could advance to the World Series with a win in Los Angeles tomorrow night.

NFL

The Lions visit the unbeaten Vikings in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. Minnesota running back Aaron Jones is listed as questionable for the game. 

The Packers host the Texans in a 1:00 contest.
