Calumet Falls in Volleyball Semis – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team ended its tournament run with a 3-0 (16-25, 16-25, 14-25) loss to Bronson in the state tournament semifinals yesterday. Hailey Wickstrom led the Copper Kings with 15 kills. The Vikings established themselves early, pulling out to a 15-3 lead in the first set. Calumet hung tough in the second set, trailing just 14-12 when Bronson began to pull away. The third set was much like the first, with the Vikings opening a 10-2 lead. The Copper Kings close their season with a record of 40 wins and 11 losses. Link to game stats here.

The high school hockey season opened last night, as Jeffers defeated Gaylord 6-1. The Jets will face Sault Ste. Marie tonight at the Soo Elks Showcase, and will take on Big Rapids there tomorrow afternoon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Alaska-Anchorage tonight and tomorrow night. It’s the start of an MTU Athletics Logo Bextended trip that will also see them play at Alaska-Fairbanks next weekend.

The MTU women’s basketball team entertains Minnesota-Crookston tonight at 5:30, and Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow at 4:00. The Tech men’s basketball team hosts Southwest Minnesota State tonight at 7:30, and Minnesota State Moorhead tomorrow at 6:00. It’s the first home action for both teams this season.

The NMU women’s basketball team entertains Concordia-St. Paul tonight, and Minnesota-Crookston tomorrow. The Wildcats’ men’s basketball team welcomes Minnesota State Moorhead tonight, and Southwest Minnesota State tomorrow.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team skates at Lawrence University tonight and tomorrow. The Lions’ Finlandia Lions New Logowomen’s hockey team hosts Concordia-Wisconsin tonight at 7:15, then heads to Adrian for a match on Sunday.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team opens its season tonight at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. They’ll play at Alma College tomorrow. The Finlandia women’s hoops team begins its season at the Hope College tip-off tournament in Holland. They’ll face the host Dutchmen tonight, and either Franklin College or Carroll College tomorrow.

The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Washington tonight. Jimmy Howard will start in goal. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Former Michigan Tech hockey star Blake Pietila did not make his NHL debut last night. The New Jersey Devils called him up from Albany on Wednesday, but he was scratched from their game against the Sharks. New Jersey skates at Los Angeles tomorrow evening.

The Detroit Pistons visit the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Carolina Panthers held off a late comeback by the New Orleans Saints to claim a 23-20 victory.

The Detroit Lions host the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 1:00 game on Sunday. The Green Bay Packers visit Washington for the Sunday night game. Hear both broadcasts on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
