Calumet, E-TC Girls Advance in Hoops Tourney – Tuesday Sports Wrap

In girls basketball tournament regional semifinals last night…
• In Division Three, Calumet advanced with a 57-41 victory over Menominee. Marybeth Halonen led the Copper Kings with 19 points. Calumet will face St. Ignace in the regional championship game tomorrow night at 7:00 in Sault Ste. Marie. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. The Saints eliminated Alcona 80-24 in the other semifinal.
• In Division Four, Ewen-Trout Creek edged Baraga 45-43. Elise Besonen’s shot from the baseline at the buzzer was the game-winner. See video highlights here. The Panthers will play Carney-Nadeau for the regional crown tomorrow night at 7:00 at Gladstone. The Wolves ousted Munising 67-32 in the other semifinal

In boys regional semifinals tonight…
 • In Division Four, Chassell faces Bessemer at 6:30 at the SDC. Carney-Nadeau faces Rapid River in the other semifinal.
 • In Division Three, Jeffers meets Iron Mountain tonight at 7:00 at Gladstone. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Charlevoix meets Oscoda in the other semifinal.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Florida Panthers tonight. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons broke their four-game losing streak with a 118-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors last night. Saddiq Bey, Hamidou Diallo and Saben Lee each scored 19.

The Pistons host the Portland Trailblazers tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 5-2 yesterday. Akil Badoo and Miguel Cabrera homered. José Ureña pitched into the fifth inning, and gave up a run on just one hit.

The Tigers wrap up their Grapefruit League schedule today against the Tampa Bay Rays. Casey Mize will start for Detroit. 

Renato Núñez will stay with the Detroit organization. The first baseman had an opportunity to opt out of the minor league contract he signed before spring training when he didn’t make the opening day roster. He has decided to accept an assignment to Toledo.

Tigers pitching coach Chris Fetter will miss opening day. He’s been diagnosed with COVID-19. Pitcher Spencer Turnbull also remains sidelined because of COVID-19 issues. Club officials say the rest of the players and staff have tested clean.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Texas Rangers 4-0 last night. Adrian Houser gave up just two hits before leaving in the sixth inning.

The Brewers conclude their spring schedule against the Rangers this afternoon. Brett Anderson is scheduled to start.
