Calumet Dominates WestPAC Volleyball Honors – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball tonight…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Ewen-Trout Creek and Dollar Bay in a triangular.
– Baraga plays at Chassell.
– L’Anse welcomes Ontonagon.

WestPAC champion Calumet has swept the top honors in the conference volleyball awards. Lea Bjorn was named Player of the Year, Amber Johnson was named Defensive Player of the Year, and Matt Laho was honored as Coach of the Year.

First team all-stars include Clariane Alkuino from Hancock; Madi Dillinger and Kendra Monette from Houghton; Brea Johnson and Celia Kiilunen from Calumet; and Rachael Tefft from West Iron County. Second team honors went to Niina Anderson and Ally Spence of Calumet; Harlee Froberg, Kenzie Klein and Jada Markham from Houghton; and Victoria Maloney of West Iron County. Houghton’s Kiley Farrey, Hancock’s Karena Holmstrom and Ally Laux,  West Iron County’s Breanna Kemppainen, and Haley Nankervis from L’Anse received Honorable Mention votes.

MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference North Division this season. Ferris State and Lake Superior State finished first and second in the coaches poll. Northern Michigan was picked to finish fifth out of the six teams in the division. Ashland was voted number-one in the South Division. Kyle Monroe of the Huskies was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will skate at Tampa Bay tonight. Newly-signed Andreas Athanasiou worked out with the team yesterday, and could see action this evening. Pregame will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
Tobias Harris scored 34 points, as the Detroit Pistons routed the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-101 last night. Andre Drummond collected 15 rebounds. The Pistons are off until Saturday, when they face the Clippers in Los Angeles.

MLB
The Houston Astros evened the World Series at a win per team with a lengthy 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. The Astros trailed 3-1 when Justin Verlander left after six innings. They scored one in the eighth, and tied it in the top of the ninth. Each team scored twice in the 10th. George Springer’s two-run homer in the top of the 11th put the Astros back on top. L-A scored once in the bottom of the 12th, before Yasiel Puig struck out to end the contest. Game three will be played tomorrow night in Houston.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have signed kicker Matt Prater to a three-year contract extension.
